Winter brings challenges that even the most seasoned Alberta driver might have trouble navigating. While most of us living in Edmonton know to only drive with winter tires and to pack an emergency kit in the vehicle, there are a few winter driving tips that get overlooked each year that make a big difference when it comes to preparing yourself for colder temperatures and bad road conditions.
We put together five tips every Albertan should know before they hit the road this winter. With a little planning and some foresight, we hope everyone makes it to their final destination safe and sound.
Winter Driving Tip #1: Attend Your Regular Maintenance Appointments
Toyota recommends that you bring your vehicle in for regular servicing every 6 months or 8,000 km, whichever comes first. Each vehicle has its own recommended maintenance schedule which you can follow in the owner’s manual or check online here.
Toyota accounts for seasonal changes so sticking to the schedule makes sure your vehicle has the right fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, etc.) and parts (winter tires, wiper blades, etc.) to withstand even the most brutal of temperatures.
Because we all have a lot going on in our daily lives, the Toyota Service Connect App stays on top of your maintenance schedule for you. It monitors the health of your vehicle and sends push notifications to your phone when it’s time to make an appointment.
Winter Driving Tip #2: At a Minimum – Keep Your Gas Tank Half Full
The closer your gas tank gets to empty, the higher the chance of condensation building up in your gas lines. If the temperature drops below freezing that moisture can freeze, which can cause serious damage to your engine and in some scenarios lead to breakdowns on the road.
Another reason to keep your gas tank as full as possible is in case of a breakdown. You want enough fuel to keep you and the vehicle warm if you need to wait for help on the side of the road.
Winter Driving Tip #3: Buy Some Winter Wiper Blades
We have all been caught driving with frozen wiper blades at one time or another. They get packed full of snow and ice and instead of brushing away sleet and debris they scrape across your windshield and make things worse.
To make things even easier for yourself, we recommend shaking off your blades and leaving them extended in the air when you park somewhere or leave your vehicle outside overnight. This prevents snow and ice from forming around your blades in the first place.
Winter Driving Tip #4: Only Use Cruise Control When It Makes Sense
Everyone loves cruise control on a long stretch of highway. But in the winter months, it might not always be safe. We recommend avoiding using cruise control in the city during the winter months and especially on roads where it might be slippery or icy. If you don’t feel comfortable maintaining a steady speed for a long period of time, skip cruise control altogether.
Winter Driving Tip #5: Know How To Use Toyota Roadside Assistance
Anything can happen on the road during the winter. From an unexpected storm to highway closures, black ice patches and more, the chances of these situations are even higher in Alberta.
If the time comes and you need assistance, be sure to know how to navigate and use Toyota Roadside Assistance. Whether it’s boosting a dead battery, pulling a vehicle out of the ditch or providing emergency fuel when you run out, our roadside assistance team will make sure you get the help you need when you need it. If you just purchased a Toyota, you are covered with roadside assistance for the first three years of ownership.
Winter Driving Tips From The Pros
Our team at West Edmonton Mall Toyota has been navigating Alberta winters for a long time. We know the ins and outs of taking care of your vehicle so it takes care of you when road conditions get bad.
We always encourage our guests to purchase and install winter tires. We also recommend keeping an emergency kit in the vehicle that includes things like a shovel, granola bars, jumper cables, first aid supplies and more.
We also highly recommend bringing your vehicle in for regular servicing so our technicians can make sure everything is working as it should and are able to fix issues before they become worse at the wrong time.

Every person who lives in Edmonton knows how sloppy the roads can get during the winter. From surprise hail storms to snow, slush and rain, driving in the city requires a great set of winter wiper blades. Like winter tires, winterized wiper blades are made specifically with the colder weather in mind. That means regardless of how much snow or sleet is blasting your windshield, you have the right blades to clear your path of vision and get you where you need to go.
Winter Wiper Blades VS. Regular Wiper Blades: What’s The Difference
The biggest difference between regular wiper blades and winter wiper places is their shape and how they are made. Toyota Genuine Winter Wiper Blades have a wedge-shaped deflector that can remove snow and ice build-up in just a few swipes. Winter wiper blades are also slightly larger and thicker so the weight of the ice doesn’t hold them down.
If you drive a Toyota, then purchasing Toyota Genuine Parts is the best thing you can do for yourself and your vehicle. Not only are these parts made specifically with your vehicle in mind, but they are also designed to perform no matter what season. So whether it is pouring rain in the middle of July or snowing in December — the right parts and accessories are going to get you through with a lot less stress and a lot more peace of mind.
Need Winter Wiper Blades Installed On Your Vehicle?
Need to switch out your regular wiper blades for some designed for the colder weather? Just mention it to your service advisor on your next oil change or regularly scheduled maintenance appointment (every 6 months or 8,000 km, whichever comes first). Our Toyota technicians can swap out your old blades in a matter of minutes.
Want Your Wiper Blades To Last The Whole Season?
Let’s face it — wintertime in Edmonton can last a while. If you want your new winter wiper blades to make it to spring, we recommend making sure your blades are lifted off your windshield when your vehicle is parked. This stops them from freezing to the windshield which can break down the thick rubber needed to push that snow away.
Ready For Another Winter, Edmonton?
Driving in the winter has its challenges but if you have the right equipment things can go a lot smoother. Winter tires and wiper blades can make a big difference to how you remember this snowy season. Even the smallest things like Toyota Touch Windshield Washer Fluid can make a huge difference. Effective in temperatures as low as -40 Celcius, our washer fluid will make sure no matter how messy the highway gets you can see the road ahead clearly.
Need to make a service appointment or order winter wiper blades of your own? We got you covered. The best part? Our Service Centre is open seven days a week and late so you can find a time that is most convenient for you to pop in. Make an appointment here!
With Halloween right around the corner, Trick or Treat Yo’ Self was the theme for our latest Customer Happy Hour Event. We went all out for our guests, with tons of delicious food and drink options, fantastic live music and prizes and feature booths from some of our spooktacular retail partners — who all play a big part in making these events so memorable for our guests.
As always we want to say thank you to everyone who came out for the evening. It is always a pleasure getting to see so many familiar faces who have been with us since the early days when we were on 170th Street. We also love getting to know our new customers who have just purchased with us. These events are a great opportunity for us to show off our new dealership and all the perks that come with being a West Edmonton Mall Toyota Customer!
Special Thanks To Our WEM Retail Partners
We have nothing but gratitude for our incredible partners in the mall who make these events so memorable for our guests. Each event brings something different to the table with a new mix of retail partners and offerings. For this month, we have some familiar favourites out like Aligra Wine & Spirits and some new partners including Beck Antiques and Jewellery to show off some of their mind-boggling treasures.
Five & Dive supplied the eats this time around and can we just talk about how good those pulled pork tacos were? They also had Brisket Stuffed Mushroom Caps and shared free drink vouchers for our guests to use on Bourbon Street at a later date.
Waffloos is a new locally-owned spot inside the mall at Europa Boulevard. They have the most fantastic (and authentic) Belgium waffle bites, made fresh in-house every day. We recommend grabbing some for your next scoot around the mall.
Orange Julius was on site with freshly squeezed juice and vouchers for our guests to cash in on their next visit — redeemable at any of their three locations in West Edmonton Mall.
Our feature partner this month was Beck Antiques & Jewellery and their booth was one of the biggest hits of the night. Specializing in unique, high-value artifacts and collectibles from all around the world, they brought in some of their newest finds to share with everyone. They also did a draw for a Mystery Bag of Goodies!
Back by popular demand, Popcornwala brought their tasty kernels in for our guests to dabble in. They have two locations inside the mall and a bag of popcorn is a must during your holiday shopping this year.
MAC in Hudson’s Bay was there with some crafty Halloween makeup ideas. They did a few tutorials and had a draw for a gift basket with some of their products.
Last but certainly not least we have to thank Adam Hurst for coming down and serenading everyone with some great acoustic covers. He is a regular host at Five & Dive on Bourbon Street. So if you attended our event and loved his music, swing by and let him know in person.
Upcoming Customer Events
Being a West Edmonton Mall Toyota customer has a ton of benefits. Besides having every amenity at your fingertips while you shop and service with us, you also have access to events like these, exclusively held for our valued customers.

Winter tire season is back in Edmonton. That means the time has come to start thinking about buying new winter tires and making an appointment to change them out before the snow falls. This post will walk you through all the steps to make sure your vehicle is ready for another frosty Alberta winter.
Do You Need New Winter Tires?
The first step in the winter driving process is figuring out if you actually need new winter tires. If you bought new tires for winter last year or the year prior, you are probably good for another season.
But deciding whether you need new winter tires or not depends more on how worn out they are than how long you have had them. Even if you bought them within the last few years but you drive a lot in the winter (we’re looking at you, ski bums), you should probably check to make sure.
To figure out how worn your winter tires are, all you need to do is check the tire tread. To get the best tire performance in the winter time, we recommend replacing your tires when they are 50% worn or at 7/32” tread depth. Transport Canada says that tires at 5/32” or less are not safe to drive during the winter time.
This video will walk you through how to check the tread on your tires — with just a toonie.
Where Do I Buy Winter Tires?
If you do need new winter tires the next step is buying some. Finding the right type of tire for your specific make and model can be confusing. There are dozens of different tire brands and some vehicles require certain things. Because we know how tricky it can be, we have a team of tire specialists on hand to help answer any questions you might have about winter tires and which ones are right for your car or truck. You can also do it yourself by searching the make and model of your vehicle here.
If you own an all-wheel drive vehicle, you should replace all four tires at the same time. If you drive a front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicle, you should replace all four or at least in pairs, depending on which tires need replacing. With winter tires, we recommend buying them in sets of four.
Remember: For a tire to be considered a winter tire by Transport Canada, it must be marked with this logo:
Once you decide what type of tire you need and which brand you like — Bridgestone, Yokohama, Goodyear, Firestone, etc. — the next step is to find the best deal on winter tires in Edmonton. Once you find the best price in the city, bring it to us and we will beat it by 5%!
When Do I Make My Winter Tire Appointment?
Whether you decide to buy new winter tires this season or need to have the ones you already own put on your vehicle, the next and final step in this process is making an appointment. While there is no exact date for installing your winter tires, there is an exact temperature — 7°C and lower.
Winter tires are made with a specific type of rubber that is much softer than the rubber on your all-season or summer tires. In fact, that harder rubber begins to get tough and stiff as the temperature drops. Once it falls below 7°C, they lose their ability to get traction on slippery surfaces like ice and snow. Meanwhile, the soft rubber in winter tires begins working at its best the colder it gets, gripping the ice and giving drivers more control.
While it is a good idea to keep an eye on the weather to figure out when the right time is to make your appointment, don’t leave it until the last minute. Winter tire appointments book up fast and the last thing you want is to be caught with summer tires on when the first snowfall of the season hits.
Where Do I Make My Winter Tire Appointment?
Come see us at West Edmonton Mall Toyota! We have the biggest service centre in the city with over 70 bays to serve our guests. We also offer the most convenient hours in the city — open late until 9 PM and we’re even open on Sundays. That means you can get your tires swapped at a time that is convenient for you.
And while you wait?
Grab a free coffee and plug into the WiFi while you kick back in our comfortable service lounge. Or check out the mall and get your holiday shopping started earlier. You can even take in a movie or get a round of mini golf in. There are hundreds of stores and restaurants all around us. You don’t even have to leave the mall to see them all.
Have questions about winter tires or want us to match a competitor’s tire price? Get in touch with our team today. Or come see us in person near Entrance 24 inside West Edmonton Mall.
September brought fall weather and our third customer event of 2022 inside our new location at West Edmonton Mall. Being able to host in-person events again has been one of the highlights of this year and this past Happy Hour was no exception. We put together some of the best moments of the evening as well as gratitude for our partners who came together to make this event a memorable one for our guests.
West Edmonton Mall Toyota Happy Hour Events
The idea behind our happy hour events is simple — celebrate our customers and thank them for their support throughout the pandemic and over the years. We also thought these events were the perfect way to showcase some of the amazing shops and retailers in our new home in West Edmonton Mall.
June 2022 marked the kick-off event and after an incredible turnout and feedback, we decided to keep them rolling. This September was our third Happy Hour and another opportunity to showcase our new dealership and the advantages of being a West Edmonton Mall Toyota customer.
With students heading back to school and colder temperatures on the way, we decided to lean into autumn with a fall theme for this latest event. The talented team from West Edmonton Mall Style put together a fashion show that included all the latest trends for the season. And who better to model all the looks than our own team?
A special thank you to Ellysia, Brandy, Simon, and Scott who rocked their outfits for everyone. It takes courage to step out into the spotlight and they did it with such confidence and ease.
A new season doesn’t just require a new outfit. It also means it’s time for a fresh new cut. Thankfully, the team from Eveline Charles was there with some hair models showing all the possibilities of what a new style can do for your look.
They had a display that walked our guests through their extensive list of services and spa treatments. So whether a haircut was on the docket or just a relaxing weekend of pampering, the team at Eveline Charles made sure our guests knew what was possible.
Hudson’s Bay inside West Edmonton Mall also came out to show off their various products for fall including a special showcase on Dior. There was a lot of excitement around their table, with our guests learning about the latest products to hit their shelves as well as some mini skincare and make-up tutorials.
What Is Happy Hour Without Great Food and Drinks?
Sticking with the true spirit of happy hour, we invited our partners at Earls on Bourbon Street to come out and wow us with some appetizers and handhelds. The sushi was a fan favourite — our team was talking about those flavourful rolls for days afterward.
No West Edmonton Mall Toyota Happy Hour Event is complete without the fantastic drinks provided by Aligra Wine & Spirits. Alison and Grant always bring such a diverse selection of wines and beers and it’s one of the things our guests consistently rave about after each event.
You can find them beside Entrance 58 and we highly recommend giving them a visit. Between their Wine Club to their handcrafted baskets, newly updated craft beer selection and team of brilliant sommeliers that can recommend the right bottle for any occasion, we have a hard time picking our favourite thing about this unique liquor store. Oh… and our customers receive 10% off their purchases.
This year has been all about reconnecting with so many of our customers and giving them the opportunity to see why we fell in love with our new location inside West Edmonton Mall and why we know they will love it, too. Hosting these events has been a big part of that and we are just getting started.
With winter rolling in, we have some exciting plans for our next event…
And when we say exciting, we mean it.
It might just be the best one yet.
We look forward to having new partners and new offerings to showcase for you all. In the meantime, stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook for all the details.
Toyota royalty came to visit our new dealership inside West Edmonton Mall last month and it was an honour to show off what we have been proudly building for the last few years.
Toyota Canada President and CEO Larry Hutchinson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Cyril Dimitris and Prairie and Pacific Zone Manager Alec Markin all made the journey together for an afternoon filled with tours and talks of the new space.
We Make Convenience #1 At West Edmonton Mall Toyota
We started as a small dealership on the outskirts of West Edmonton in 1988. Today, we are now the first full-service dealership to operate in the world’s largest mall! What a journey it’s been. One of the things we were most excited to show the team from Toyota corporate was just how convenient we have made things for our guests. Convenience was one of our top inspirations when we first approached Toyota Canada with the idea of moving our dealership into the mall.
We knew that being inside the largest mall in North America — with all its shopping, restaurants, and amenities — would make the lives of our customers that much easier. Especially for our service guests, who could enjoy all the mall has to offer while they waited for their vehicle. We even extended our hours so our service centre is open late — seven days a week. Meaning you could still get your vehicle in for a service after work and on the weekends.
Navigating this momentous change has not been without a few speed bumps. But after almost a year of being fully operational in our larger-than-life space, our team is operating better than ever before. Whether you need to purchase a new Toyota or a pre-owned vehicle, need help with car parts or accessories, have a financing question, or need a detail and a car service… our team of talented people has you covered.
Thank You Toyota Canada
On behalf of our management team and the entire staff at West Edmonton Mall Toyota, thank you to Larry, Cyril and Alec for making the trek to Edmonton to see our new spot.
Toyota Canada has supported this legendary venture from the beginning. From breaking first ground back in 2019 to opening our doors for the first time in 2021 — we can not thank you enough for all the support.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our owners Jim and Shahid for joining them for a visit. It is always fantastic having you in and we hope to see you all again soon. If your looking for the best Toyota Tacoma for sale or the Toyota Tundra, then we have you sorted!
If you are considering an electric vehicle in the midst of some of the highest gas prices Edmonton has ever seen — you are not alone. The number of Canadians wanting to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) in 2022 has skyrocketed with 46% of people saying their next vehicle will be an EV, according to a recent survey done by EY Mobility Consumer Index. That is up 11% from the previous year!
The thing is…
There are a lot of mistruths floating around about what electric vehicles are and what they do. This blog post will eliminate the confusion and help you make the decision if an electric vehicle is right for your next vehicle.
If you have more questions about electric vehicles, feel free to reach out to anyone on our team at West Edmonton Mall Toyota. Our Toyota specialists are some of the best in Edmonton and can help you learn and source the right vehicle for you — electric or hybrid.
What Types Of Electric Vehicles Are There?
There are several different types of electric vehicles but for our purposes here today, we will focus on the four models Toyota carries.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are when a gas engine is paired with an electric motor. Their hybrid battery recharges as you drive, so you will never need to stop to plug it in.
Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs) operate the same way as HEVs, but instead drivers have the option to plug it in for extended electric-only range.
Battery Electric Vehicles: Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are zero-emission vehicles powered by electricity alone. You will need to plug BEVs in, but the system also uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery as you drive.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles: Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) use hydrogen as an energy source to power high-output electric motors, emitting only water from the tailpipe.
Are Electric Vehicles More Expensive?
The short and sweet answer is — it depends on the brand and model. While some brands offer electric vehicles at a higher cost, other brands have a relatively consistent pricing model depending on the lineup and trim you choose. However, oftentimes the cost of an electric vehicle from the beginning is more expensive. But this is just in terms of the initial cost of the vehicle.
Electric vehicles can actually save you money over the course of ownership. Especially as the cost of fuel continues to rise in Canada, passing $2.20 in major cities like Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto. The Government of Canada also offers the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program which helps make purchasing them more affordable.
There are two rebates available for this program.
Battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and longer-range plug-in hybrid vehicles that have an electric range equal to or greater than 50 km are eligible for up to $5,000
Shorter range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that have an electric range under 50 km are eligible for up to $2,500.
For Toyota vehicles, the models eligible to receive this benefit are Prius Prime, RAV4 Prime, and the Mirai.
Do Electric Vehicles Require More Maintenance?
Toyota Gas vehicles and electric vehicles work differently and require different parts, however, the maintenance required to upkeep both follow the same maintenance schedule – every 6 months or 8,000 km.
Another way to think about electric vehicles is that they don’t have an engine or transmission. This means there are fewer mechanical parts to maintain and replace. Anyone that has had to replace an engine or transmission knows how costly that can get.
New Toyota Electric Vehicles equipped with Toyota Service Connect let you stay in the know about the health and wellness of your ride. From vehicle health reports to information and service reminders, you can stay on top of things before major problems occur.
Are Electric Vehicles Slower?
Electric motors generate 100% of their available torque instantly. This means you can accelerate more quickly and smoother than you can while driving a gas-powered vehicle. In a PHEV, you can travel even faster and further in EV-mode than conventional hybrid electric vehicles. In fact, the Toyota RAV4 Prime puts out an amazing 302 horsepower and goes from 0-to-100 km/h in just six seconds. That makes it the second fastest Toyota on the streets next to the Supra… a sports car.
Are Electric Vehicles Practical in Edmonton?
The City of Edmonton has made reducing greenhouse gas emissions one of their top priorities in recent years. Their Electric Vehicle (EV) Strategy identifies how they plan on making it easier for people to own an electric vehicle, prepare the path for electrifying transportation of personal vehicles and ultimately help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That includes increasing the amount of charging stations across the city.
There are 106 public charging station ports (Level 2 and Level 3) within Edmonton. 85% of the ports are level 2 charging ports and 70% of the ports offer free charges for your electric car. You can even find level 2 charging stations at West Edmonton Mall!
Toyota electric vehicles can go further ever thanks to battery technology getting more powerful and affordable. Battery size isn’t the only thing that affects how long an electric vehicle can go. Driving habits matter as well. For example, the quicker you drive, how much you need to accelerate, whether you turn on your AC or the heater, as well as how warm it is outside, will all play a role in how long you can last on a single charge.
The RAV4 Prime is similar to the non-plug-in RAV4 Hybrid, but adds a larger battery pack that provides up to 68 km of electric driving range. Toyota’s energy consumption ratings are 2.5 Le/100 km in electric mode and 6.0 L/100 km in combined city/highway hybrid driving.
