Winter tires are the best choice for Edmontonians as the engineered rubber is designed to perform optimally in cold, snowy conditions. We recommend changing to winter tires when daily temperatures drop below 7°C.
In addition to superior cold-weather performance, winter tires improve grip and traction, remain flexible in freezing temperatures, and have better braking performance.
Winter tires are created to perform best in cold and icy conditions, but all-season tires are intended for year-round use in mild to moderate climates. While all-season tires are perfect for summer weather, we don’t recommend using them in Canada’s severe winter season.

These time-saving tires are intended for year-round use in mild to moderate climates. They’re designed for great performance, long tread life and improved fuel efficiency, but are not recommended for Canada’s severe winter conditions.

Secondly, summer tires are specifically designed for warmer conditions and sportier vehicles. They can enhance steering response and handling precision, and offer a firm grip on dry roads! However, as they are intended for sportier vehicles, they can wear out more quickly than all-seasons due to enhanced grip.
These tires are recommended as soon as daily temperatures drop below 7°C. Why? Simply, they are designed to perform optimally in cold, snowy conditions. Winter tires are made from engineered rubber intended for use only in cold temperatures and offer superior traction over other types of tires.
If you do a lot of inter-provincial travel, you’ll know that some BC highways legally require winter tires from October 1st to April 30th. Additionally, Quebec legally requires them between December 1st and March 15th!
However, using winter tires in warmer weather conditions can result in accelerated tire wear and poor vehicle handling.
Light truck tires are designed for off-road traction, on-road handling, and high-level performance. So if you own a Toyota Truck or SUV, these tires are for you!
We recommend Canadians in passenger vehicles use all-season tires in the warmer months of the year. For the colder months, we recommend winter tires. For specialty vehicles or trucks, there can be other tires to consider.

The tire tread is the part of the tire that makes contact with the road, and groove patterns can vary from tire type to manufacturer. As you drive, the tire tread gradually wears down from contact with the road.
A key part of checking if your winter tires are safe to drive on the road is checking the tire tread depth. A Toyota Service Technician can check and record tire tread depth for you, or you can do it yourself at home!
For this, all you’ll need is a quarter. Take the quarter and insert it into one of the tire grooves. If you can see the tip of the caribou’s nose, you may need to replace your tires! Alternating your tires can help reduce accelerated tread wear and help your tires’ last longer, but if your tread has worn too low, you will need to replace them.

Arthur Jeanson bought his Toyota Tundra from our team at West Edmonton Mall Toyota (previously known as Mayfield Toyota) on March 10, 2007. After years of reliable performance and countless memories, his Tundra hit the 1,000,000 km mark in June 2024 — 17 years later.
Toyota has become synonymous with reliability, and their vehicles stand the test of time. Arthur’s tale is more common than you may think! We loved hearing Arthur’s story and decided to share his remarkable journey with you here. This blog will detail the lifespan of Arthur’s Toyota Tundra in Western Canada, from delivery to a million kilometres, and some of his favourite memories he made with it along the way.
Arthur Jeanson is one of our loyal West Edmonton Mall Toyota customers. He took delivery of his brand-new Toyota Tundra from us in March 2007, back when we were called Mayfield Toyota. It’s hard to believe we’ve been serving the communities of West Edmonton for over 25 years. While our name and location might have changed, our appreciation for loyal customers like Arthur remains the same.
Arthur has had many road trips and memories in his 4.7L Toyota Tundra. From county lines to grocery runs, his 2007 Tundra has done it all!
A fan of weekend getaways, this truck has hauled boats, ATVs, and Sea-Doos for friends and family. Rolling down sunny Manitoba highways with the windows down, and braving chilly Albertan winters, the 4.7L Toyota Tundra did everything Arthur needed to do. Not only could he rely on it for the fun times, but it was also a sturdy and dependable work vehicle that made hauling easy.

What a wild ride it’s been!

Gone are the days of confusion in a service centre! Our West Edmonton Mall Toyota experts will explain common car parts, what they do, and how they affect your vehicle. Some car parts for beginners include alternators, spark plugs, fuel injectors, catalytic converters, transmissions, and brake pads.

What’s a catalytic converter? What does a powertrain mean? Why do my brake pads need replacing? To sum up, keep reading to learn more about the basics of car mechanics so you can be prepared the next time your car needs a tune-up.
Every vehicle has a battery, and if your car has ever refused to start, you’ve likely had a dead battery. The alternator is responsible for keeping your battery charged! It’s driven by a belt (called a serpentine belt) and generates electricity by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy while your car runs.
Moreover, it supplies electricity to your whole car, not just your battery, including your electrical components.
What is a serpentine belt?
A long rubber belt that transports power to engine accessories, like your alternator.
Brakes are used to halt and slow down your vehicle, and keep it in one place when parked. Most modern brake systems are comprised of the following parts: brake rotors, pads, and calipers.
So what happens when you brake? The car signals to the brake cylinder and brake fluid travels down the hoses to your brake calipers. The calipers will squeeze your brake pads together against the brake rotor, and this friction slows down the wheel.
The brake pads in your car are made of steel backing plates with some material on the surface facing the brake rotors. This friction material can be ceramic, semi-metallic, or organic.
Because they are regularly exposed to friction, your brake pads can become worn out. Therefore it’s important to get your brake pads checked and replaced to maintain the health of your braking system!

The brake rotors in your car are circular discs connected to each wheel and are designed to turn kinetic energy into thermal energy. These discs have a large surface area, and as the brake pads are squeezed together by the brake caliper, friction and resistance slow your tires down.
As mentioned, the brake rotors are exposed to heat and friction and occasionally need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Ensure they are replaced in pairs, just like brake pads!
Brake fluid is forced down the line to the caliper where it is pushed against the rotors. It fits like a clamp on the wheel’s rotor and houses your brake pads.

Most modern engines generate energy by igniting a combination of air and fuel that moves pistons and creates energy that powers your vehicle. You’re looking at repairs related to your engine ignition if your service technician mentions ‘fuel injector’, ‘pistons’, or ‘spark plugs’.
The fuel injector is a small part with a big role! Its nozzle delivers fuel to the combustion chamber and that’s where the spark plugs ignite it. This is to say the fuel injector delivers the right fuel amount for your engine to work appropriately.
Spark plugs are named after their action – causing sparks! They are electrical devices in an internal combustion engine, and their sparks ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

Most car engines have pistons, which are short cylinders that fit inside a tube where it moves up and down against a liquid or gas. Engines can have as many as four, six, or eight pistons in an engine depending on the type!
When gas mist from the fuel injector is ignited by the spark plugs in the combustion chamber, a gas explosion moves the pistons. The faster the pistons move, the more revolutions per minute (RPMs) your car has.
Let’s move on to the basic parts of a vehicle’s exhaust system.
This valuable device is part of your exhaust emissions controls, and it converts pollutants in your exhaust gas into less-toxic gases before it’s released into the air.
The catalytic converter uses a process called catalysis, adding a catalyst to facilitate a redox reaction. So when exhaust comes from your engine, it first passes through your catalytic converter before the next step… the resonator.
The resonator is designed to eliminate sounds at a certain frequency so that frequencies bounce off the inside of this device and cancel each other out. It removes high-pitched noises before the exhaust reaches the muffler.
A muffler may be the most commonly known item of the exhaust system on your vehicle. It reduces the noise emitted by the engine exhaust (lots of gas explosions and pistons moving simultaneously) and can also be called a silencer. You can try and ignore muffler issues but you will hear your car running VERY loudly!

While your car has many filters, we’ll look at two of the most popular filters: the engine air filter and the cabin air filter.
Engine air filters clean the air that enters your engine BEFORE combustion, this helps ensure the fuel ignite is cleaner and contains fewer particles that can cause long-term issues. They can come in a few shapes, mainly flat, round, or conical.
Your owner’s manual will tell you exactly how often this should be changed to protect your engine, but we recommend a new engine filter every 20,000-25,000km.

Cabin air filters are different! They’re designed to clean the air entering your car’s cabin and protect you from exhaust, dust particles, allergens, and other particles in the air. These air filters are typically flat and pleated.
You should check your owner’s manual to see how often these should be changed, but in general, your filter should be changed when you get an oil change. Get your air filter inspected during your next oil change to see how dirty it is!

Powertrains in vehicles are made of a few parts forming one system, including the engine, transmission, drive shafts, and more. This combination of parts dictates the amount of power your vehicle can deliver, hence the name, powertrain!
The transmission is the middle man between the engine and the wheels, and it sends power from the engine via a system of gears and gear trains. This allows you to apply power from your engine in a controlled manner via your gear shift, or gearbox.
In a manual transmission vehicle, the driver uses a stick shift to change the gears to control their speed manually. In an automatic transmission vehicle, the driver selects a driving mode like ‘drive’ or ‘reverse’ and the car will control and change the gears automatically.

Your WEM Toyota App
Our West Edmonton Mall Toyota app can be downloaded on the Apple or Google Play stores for your iPhone and Android devices.
Follow the steps below to register to receive exclusive app benefits as our West Edmonton Mall Toyota customer.
Once you’ve downloaded the app from your app store of choice, open the app to our Login / Sign Up screen!
To create a new account, follow the sign-up steps listed. For existing West Edmonton Mall Toyota customers, use the same email address or phone number listed on your customer account with us. This will ensure your collected customer points transfer to your app correctly!

You can now explore all the features our app has to offer! Let’s focus on the main dashboard for now.
There are 3 main icons you can see on your home dashboard, including “Points”, “WEM Offers” and “Book”. We’ll be exploring those features a little later in this blog. Let’s draw our eyes to the “Featured” option at the bottom of your dashboard!
In this Featured section, you can swipe through current offers from our West Edmonton car dealership. We’ll highlight deals on new and pre-owned vehicles, seasonal promotions, and service offers.
You can see an envelope icon in the top right-hand corner of your screen, these are your notifications! Click on these to see any important account or vehicle news from our team.
In the top left-hand corner of your screen, you will see a list icon that resembles a hamburger. This is your main drop-down menu with a list of available features, such as “My Profile”. You can update your basic details, contact details, and security and notification settings here!

Let’s dive into our West Edmonton Mall Toyota customer points system!
You can access the points system through one of two ways: by clicking the “Points” icon on your dashboard, or selecting “Points” under your drop-down menu.
You can see how many points you have accumulated on your Points screen. Each point is worth a dollar value of $1.00, and can be accrued through purchases at West Edmonton Mall Toyota!
Points stay active for 5 years and can be used towards future purchases at our dealership. (Like a down payment on a new vehicle at our West Edmonton car dealership!)
To redeem points at our dealership, you will need your phone! To redeem your points, open your app to the “Points” screen and hit “Redeem”. A special one-time code will show up, and you need to show this to your Service Advisor. Your points will be automatically removed from your account, and your Service Advisor will remove the dollar amount from your bill.
Note: if you only want to redeem a set amount of points, you can type in your custom amount in the “Enter Points to Redeem” bar.
You may have noticed that we have a Shared Points feature. You can now share points with a partner, a friend, or a family member in the same household, and pool points together for future purchases.
Select “Share My Points” from the drop-down menu to invite others to share points with you.
