You need to be as educated as possible when selling or trading in your vehicle. Don’t go through with a trade without knowing the resale value of your vehicle and doing your research!
We recommend using online price value estimators to find estimated minimum prices for your make and model.

Documentation can make or break a good trade-in value! We recommend keeping any maintenance documents, oil change receipts, vehicle owner’s guide, etc., with you to bring to the dealership. These documents can show that you take good care of your vehicle and that maintenance schedules have been followed.

VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number and should be included in the provided documentation. You can typically find your VIN engraved on a metal plate on the driver’s side of your vehicle (bottom of the door or dashboard) or your pink slip.

When you prepare your car for trade-in, the dealership will assess the car’s value and apply that value towards the purchase of a new vehicle. This is a great and convenient way to upgrade your vehicle!
Multiple factors will affect the car’s resale or trade-in value (see below for Tip #4). But what happens if you want to trade in a car that you owe money on?
Dealerships will run a lien search to see how much money is owed on the car. A car lien, according to the Government of Canada, is “a lender’s claim for repayment that they register against a car or other type of motor vehicle.”
If the trade-in value for your vehicle is higher than the loan balance, you’ll receive credit towards the new one! However, if the loan balance (lien) is higher than the car’s trade-in value, then you’ll need to pay the difference. This can mean higher monthly payments or an increased cost upfront.
Let’s continue with our tips to prepare your car for trade-in. Multiple factors can affect your car’s trade-in value, and staying informed is key.
Popular car makes and models are more likely to be resold and will be more likely to be desired by a dealership. General vehicle upkeep, such as eating, drinking, or smoking in the car, can also influence resale value. If your vehicle has been exposed to smoke regularly, it’s less likely to resell well.
Moreover, mileage is one of the most important car value factors. If your car is over 100,000km, its value reduces. This means that vehicles used for extensive travel or long commutes can have lower resale values than vehicles driven less often.
These factors will affect the dollar value offered to you by the dealership.
So you have your ducks (and documents) in a row… what’s next? If your vehicle has any service or engine lights on, we recommend sorting that out as soon as possible. Having no obvious service issues makes your vehicle more appealing for a trade!
If you have a high-mileage vehicle, it’s quite common for check engine lights to turn on due to faulty oxygen sensors.
To identify why your engine light is on, we have two recommendations.
If you’re due for your service maintenance appointment, you can have our technicians take a look at the source of the check engine light at the same time. Book your service appointment with our team here.
You can use a code reader if you’re on a tight budget or want to try your hand yourself. A code reader is a tool that allows you to read, display, and clear codes on your vehicle. It can also help you diagnose what the engine light is telling you. Once you know the issue, you can make minor repairs yourself or communicate it with our service team.
Does your car have minor dents and scratches? See if they can be buffed out. Is your headlamp broken? A simple bulb replacement can solve that. Do you have a dirty air filter? You can easily replace it yourself or have it done during a service appointment.
We also recommend double-checking that you have all the original items with the car. For example, if you removed a headrest or lost your gas cap along the way, these will need to be replaced.
Bonus: dealerships love it if you have both sets of keys! Keys can be expensive to remake, so bring both sets of keys to sweeten your trade-in deal.
As you’re doing minor repairs on your vehicle, take the chance to examine the state of your car’s tires.

However, as they are intended for sportier vehicles, they can wear out more quickly than all-seasons due to enhanced grip.
These tires are recommended as soon as daily temperatures drop below 7°C. Why? Simply, they are designed to perform optimally in cold, snowy conditions. Winter tires are made from engineered rubber intended for use only in cold temperatures and offer superior traction over other types of tires.
If you do a lot of inter-provincial travel, you’ll know that some BC highways legally require winter tires from October 1st to April 30th. Additionally, Quebec legally requires them between December 1st and March 15th!
However, using winter tires in warmer weather conditions can result in accelerated tire wear and poor vehicle handling.
Light truck tires are designed for off-road traction, on-road handling, and high-level performance. So if you own a Toyota Truck or SUV, these tires are for you!
We recommend Canadians in passenger vehicles use all-season tires in the warmer months of the year. For the colder months, we recommend winter tires. For specialty vehicles or trucks, there can be other tires to consider.

A key part of checking if your winter tires are safe to drive on the road is checking the tire tread depth. A Toyota Service Technician can check and record tire tread depth for you, or you can do it yourself at home!
For this, all you’ll need is a quarter. Take the quarter and insert it into one of the tire grooves. If you can see the tip of the caribou’s nose, you may need to replace your tires! Alternating your tires can help reduce accelerated tread wear and help your tires’ last longer, but if your tread has worn too low, you will need to replace them.

Book a service appointment with our team to inspect and refill your vehicle fluids, including engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, or transmission fluids. Per the Toyota Maintenance Schedule, we recommend getting your vehicle fluids checked every 8,000 km or six months.
Regular Toyota Maintenance should be scheduled every six months or 8,000 kilometres, or whichever comes first. Maintaining your car regularly is important as it reduces the number of service-related breakdowns in the future.

Arthur Jeanson bought his Toyota Tundra from our team at West Edmonton Mall Toyota (previously known as Mayfield Toyota) on March 10, 2007. After years of reliable performance and countless memories, his Tundra hit the 1,000,000 km mark in June 2024 — 17 years later.
Toyota has become synonymous with reliability, and their vehicles stand the test of time. Arthur’s tale is more common than you may think! Take Mark Intihar for example, the Ontario man whose 2000 Toyota Sienna hit the 2,000,000-kilometre mark. (Or simply Google “the Toyota High Mileage Club” to see Toyota vehicles across the globe reach high kilometrages!)

We loved hearing Arthur’s story and decided to share his remarkable journey with you here. This blog will detail the lifespan of Arthur’s Toyota Tundra in Western Canada, from delivery to a million kilometres, and some of his favourite memories he made with it along the way.
Arthur Jeanson is one of our loyal West Edmonton Mall Toyota customers. He took delivery of his brand-new Toyota Tundra from us in March 2007, back when we were called Mayfield Toyota. It’s hard to believe we’ve been serving the communities of West Edmonton for over 25 years. While our name and location might have changed, our appreciation for loyal customers like Arthur remains the same.
Arthur has had many road trips and memories in his 4.7L Toyota Tundra. From county lines to grocery runs, his 2007 Tundra has done it all!
A fan of weekend getaways, this truck has hauled boats, ATVs, and Sea-Doos for friends and family. Rolling down sunny Manitoba highways with the windows down, and braving chilly Albertan winters, the 4.7L Toyota Tundra did everything Arthur needed to do. Not only could he rely on it for the fun times, but it was also a sturdy and dependable work vehicle that made hauling easy.

Arthur’s Tundra journey continues today. While Arthur currently lives in South Eastern Manitoba, he and his Tundra have moved all over Western Canada. He spent roughly 3 years in Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), 5 years in Peace Country (Northern Alberta), and a few years around Edmonton before relocating back to Manitoba in 2015. What a wild ride it’s been!

We recommend booking a service appointment check-up every 8,000 KM or 6 months, whichever comes first. This keeps your car maintained regularly and reduces the number of service-related issues down the line. That includes things like regular oil and fluid changes! (Just ask Arthur, he’s had many on his journey to a million kilometres.)
