A good car wash feels satisfying. A professional detail? That’s something else entirely.
Most drivers have tried the DIY route at some point — a garden hose, a bucket of soapy water, and a couple of hours on the driveway. And while there’s nothing wrong with keeping things clean, there’s a meaningful difference between a wash and a true detail.
If you’ve ever wondered whether a professional detailing service is actually worth the investment, here’s an honest look at both sides.
Detailing goes well beyond a standard wash. A professional detail addresses both the interior and exterior of the vehicle in depth, using specialized products, equipment, and techniques that most home setups simply can’t replicate.

On the exterior, that means a thorough hand wash, paint decontamination, and treatments that protect your vehicle’s finish. On the interior, it means cleaning surfaces that rarely get attention during a regular wash, including vents, door jambs, upholstery, and all the places where dirt and odours quietly build up over time.
A clean vehicle isn’t just about appearance. Regular professional detailing helps protect the long-term value of your investment in a few key ways.

Both approaches have genuine merit depending on what your vehicle needs. Here’s a balanced look at each.

West Edmonton Mall Toyota offers four levels of detailing service, so you can choose the depth of clean that fits your vehicle and your needs.
Deluxe — The ideal starting point. A complete hand wash, interior clean, deodorizing, and vehicle inspection.
Premium — Everything in the Deluxe package, plus wax and tire shine for added paint protection and a showroom finish.
Ultimate — The deepest level of service. Complete interior shampooing and paint restoration, ideal for vehicles that need a full reset.
À La Carte — Individual services are also available if you need a specific treatment rather than a full package.
Full pricing details are available HERE.
One of the advantages of detailing at WEM Toyota is the location. While your vehicle gets the full-service treatment from our detail team, you can grab lunch on BRBN St., catch a movie at Scotiabank Theatre, or get some shopping done, all without leaving the mall.
Our detail team works on all makes and models, not just Toyotas. So whether you drive a RAV4 or a pickup truck, the same level of care applies.

For regular maintenance washes, DIY works fine. But when it comes to protecting your paint, deep-cleaning the interior, or restoring your vehicle after a tough season, professional detailing delivers results that a hose and a sponge simply can’t match.

It’s also worth thinking about detailing as part of your vehicle’s long-term care, not just a one-time treat. A vehicle that receives regular professional attention holds its condition better, costs less to maintain over time, and retains stronger value over time.

Winter in Alberta is no joke. Between icy roads, freezing temperatures, and gravel-covered highways, your vehicle works overtime. As the snow melts and temperatures rise, spring is the perfect time to reset, refresh, and protect your investment.
At West Edmonton Mall Toyota, we see it every year: drivers who take a little time in spring to maintain their vehicles avoid bigger (and more expensive) problems later on. Here’s what to prioritize this season.

Once temperatures consistently stay above 7°C, it’s time to switch from winter tires to all-season or summer tires.
Winter tires are built for cold conditions. In warmer weather, they wear faster and reduce efficiency.
Swapping them out:
To make it even easier, take advantage of our Swap, Store, Shine promotion. We’ll professionally swap your seasonal tires, store them safely, and give your vehicle a fresh shine so it’s ready for spring driving, without you having to transport or store heavy tires at home.
Snow, moisture, road salt, and stop-and-go driving all impact your braking system.
If you notice:
It’s time for an inspection. Even if everything feels normal, a seasonal brake check adds peace of mind.

Your brakes are your vehicle’s most important safety system, yet they’re also one of the most overlooked. Knowing the signs your brakes need replacement helps you avoid costly repairs and stay confident behind the wheel through every season.

Below, you’ll learn the most common warning signs, when to replace your brakes, how seasonal driving affects brake wear, and when to book an inspection at West Edmonton Mall Toyota for expert, Toyota-certified care.
A high-pitched squeal during braking often comes from a built-in wear indicator. These small metal tabs alert drivers when brake pads begin thinning, making this one of the earliest signs your brakes need replacement.
A grinding noise is more serious. It usually means that the brake pad material is fully worn, and the metal components are now in contact with the rotor. Driving this way can quickly damage the rotor, resulting in increased repair costs.
If you hear grinding, book a service appointment right away.

Your dashboard brake warning light isn’t something to ignore. Even if it’s a small sensor issue, it’s still worth getting checked. Brakes are one system where early action matters.
If the steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when you slow down, your brake rotors may be warped. This often happens over time or after repeated hard braking, especially during winter driving when rotors heat and cool quickly.
A soft pedal could indicate air in the brake lines, low brake fluid, or a hydraulic issue. All require prompt inspection to ensure safe stopping power.
If you find yourself needing more room to stop, even slightly, it’s a clear sign the system isn’t performing at full strength. Worn pads, low fluid, or uneven rotors can all contribute.
If your car veers left or right when you brake, one side of the system may be wearing faster than the other. This can happen due to stuck callipers or uneven pad wear.

While the signs above give you clear indicators, many drivers wonder about timing. As a general guideline:
A Toyota-certified technician at West Edmonton Mall Toyota can give you precise timelines based on your model and driving habits.
Brake performance isn’t the same all year, especially in Alberta. Temperature, moisture, and road conditions play a big role.

Checking your brakes at least twice a year, once before winter and once in spring, helps you stay ahead of seasonal wear.
What you can check yourself:
What a professional inspection covers:
Pad thickness, rotor condition, brake fluid quality, callipers, and electronic brake systems are areas that aren’t visible without removing the wheels. During your next service appointment, our Toyota-Certified Technicians can assess all brake components and catch issues before they affect safety.

Let’s clear up a few myths that often confuse drivers.
Not always. Some Toyota brake wear indicators are designed to make noise. That being said, many issues like uneven rotor wear or seized callipers develop silently. By the time sounds appear, the problem may already be advanced.
Brake fluid naturally absorbs moisture. According to industry testing, fluid contaminated with as little as 3% water can reduce braking power and cause internal corrosion. This is why Toyota recommends periodic fluid checks and replacements based on driving conditions.
Below is an example of what a brake warning light may look like on your dashboard.

Brake warning lights only appear when a system detects a serious issue. These can be low fluid, pressure loss, or electronic failure. They don’t measure pad thickness. Manual inspection remains the most reliable way to know where your brakes stand.
A Toyota braking system is designed with precision, so it deserves service from factory-trained technicians who understand the engineering behind your vehicle. At West Edmonton Mall Toyota, you get:
If you’re planning to make the most of your visit, explore things to do in West Edmonton Mall while we service your car to turn routine maintenance into a productive (or fun) outing.
When it comes to your brakes, peace of mind matters.
If you’ve noticed any of the signs above, or if it’s been a while since your last inspection, now’s the perfect time to get your brakes checked by a Toyota specialist.

Oil is the core of your engine’s health. It reduces friction, prevents corrosion, and keeps everything running smoothly. When it gets old, contaminated, or breaks down, your engine works harder than it should. As a result, performance drops, fuel economy suffers, and long-term damage can set in.
Because of that, understanding how often to change your oil is one of the simplest ways to protect your vehicle and avoid unnecessary repairs.
Toyota Canada recommends changing your oil every 8,000 km or every 6 months when using Toyota Genuine Synthetic Oil. This interval is based on typical Canadian driving conditions and modern engine design.
Not sure what maintenance your Toyota needs? Read: Toyota Canada Maintenance Schedule
However, mileage alone doesn’t tell the full story. Oil breaks down due to time, temperature, and driving habits. That’s why the 6-month rule matters just as much as kilometres driven.
To give you context, many automotive experts suggest 5,000–8,000 km for synthetic oil, depending on climate and driving conditions. Since Edmonton regularly faces temperature swings of 25°C to –30°C, Toyota’s 8,000 km guidance is a safe, reliable benchmark.
Don’t have a Toyota? Be sure to check your Owner’s Manual to see the recommendations for your vehicle.

Even when you follow Toyota’s standard recommendation, your lifestyle may shift the ideal timing. Here’s how:
If most of your drives are under 10 minutes, your engine doesn’t warm up fully. When that happens, moisture and fuel residue don’t burn off, and oil degrades more quickly.
Oil thickens in low temperatures, so your engine works harder at startup. Checking your levels more often during winter helps prevent circulation issues.
If you tow, carry full loads, or drive long, high-speed highway routes, your oil operates at a higher temperature. Heat causes oil molecules to break down faster, which is why drivers with heavier usage patterns should stay closer to the 6-month timeline regardless of kilometres.

There are a few myths that lead drivers to delay their oil change longer than they should. Here are the big ones:
Even if you barely drive, oil still ages. Moisture forms when your car sits for long periods, and that can corrode internal components. This is why time-based intervals exist.
Synthetic oil lasts longer than conventional oil. However, it doesn’t stop contamination from dirt, metal particles, or moisture. The filter can only hold so much. Routine changes remain essential.
Read: Should You Use Synthetic Oil In Your Car?
Oil life monitors are helpful, but they aren’t perfect. They estimate usage based on algorithms, not physical oil testing. Using your owner’s manual and your driving habits is more reliable.
Book your oil change at West Edmonton Mall Toyota.

Extending your oil change beyond the recommended interval can cause:
In extreme cases, ignoring oil changes can cause engine failure, something no driver wants.

If you notice any of these early warnings, book your service right away:
Keeping an eye on these small signs can save you from much larger issues later.

Knowing how to check your engine oil helps you catch problems early, before they turn into costly repairs. The good news is, it only takes a few minutes.
First, make sure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface. Then, turn the engine off and wait 5–10 minutes so the oil can settle.
Open the hood and find the oil dipstick, usually marked with a yellow or orange handle. Pull it out and wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel.
Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again. The oil level should fall between the minimum and maximum marks. If it’s near or below the minimum line, it’s time to add oil or book a service.
Healthy oil should appear amber or light brown and flow smoothly. If the oil looks dark, gritty, sludgy, or has a burnt smell, it’s a sign your oil change is overdue.
Even if the level looks fine, pay attention to:
These can indicate oil breakdown or contamination.
If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, the technicians at West Edmonton Mall Toyota are always happy to take a look and recommend next steps.

Regular oil changes are one of the simplest ways to extend your vehicle’s life, improve fuel efficiency, and protect your engine, especially in a city with weather as unpredictable as Edmonton. When you stay on top of the recommended interval, your Toyota performs the way it was built to.
With thousands of oil changes completed every year, West Edmonton Mall Toyota is one of Edmonton’s most trusted and convenient service centres for Toyota vehicles and all makes.

Getting a flat tire is never convenient, especially when you’re navigating Alberta’s diverse driving conditions. Whether you’re commuting through Edmonton’s busy streets or exploring our beautiful province’s scenery, knowing how to safely change a tire is an essential skill every driver should master. At West Edmonton Mall Toyota, we service all makes and models, and we believe that informed drivers are safer drivers.

When you discover a flat tire, your first priority is finding a safe location to perform the change. Pull over to a flat, stable surface away from traffic – parking lots, wide shoulders, or side streets work best. Turn on your hazard lights immediately to alert other drivers, and if you have them, place reflective triangles or flares behind your vehicle according to Transport Canada’s safety guidelines.

Alberta’s weather can be unpredictable, so keep a warm jacket, gloves, and flashlight in your emergency kit. During winter months, ensure you have adequate traction under your feet and consider keeping sand or kitty litter in your trunk for extra grip.
Before attempting to change your tire, gather these essential tools from your vehicle:
Most vehicles come equipped with these items, typically stored in the trunk or under the rear cargo area. Familiarize yourself with their location before you need them in an emergency situation.
Now let’s learn how to change a tire!
Don’t have an emergency kit? Swing by our Parts Department to shop Genuine Toyota accessories like this Custom Emergency Roadside Kit.

Engage your parking brake and turn on hazard lights. Place wheel wedges behind the tires (opposite end of the car from the flat) to prevent rolling.
Remove the hubcap or wheel cover if necessary. Using your lug wrench, loosen the lug nuts by turning counterclockwise, but don’t remove them completely yet. The tire’s weight on the ground provides resistance, making this step easier before lifting the vehicle.
Consult your owner’s manual to locate the proper jack point for your specific vehicle. Place the jack securely and raise the vehicle until the flat tire is approximately six inches off the ground.
Now, fully remove the loosened lug nuts and keep them in a safe place where they won’t roll away. Pull the tire straight toward you to remove it from the wheel bolts.
Align the spare tire with the wheel bolts and push it onto the wheel hub. Replace the lug nuts and tighten them by hand initially.
Lower the jack until the spare tire touches the ground, but still supports some weight. Tighten the lug nuts with the wrench in a star or crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure. Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.
Give the lug nuts a final check to ensure they’re as tight as possible, maintaining the star pattern for even distribution.
Tire tread plays a crucial role in your vehicle’s safety and performance, particularly important for Alberta drivers who face varying road conditions throughout the year. Adequate tread depth ensures proper traction on wet, snowy, and icy surfaces that are common in our province.

The legal minimum tread depth in Canada is 1.6 millimetres, but safety experts recommend replacing tires when tread depth reaches 4 millimetres for summer tires and 6 millimetres for winter tires. You can check your tread depth using the Canadian quarter test – insert a quarter into the tread groove with the caribou facing down. If you can see the caribou’s nose, it’s time for new tires.
Uneven tread wear patterns can indicate alignment issues, improper inflation, or suspension problems. Regular tread inspections help identify these issues early, potentially saving you money on more extensive repairs while keeping you safe on Alberta’s roads.
Read: How to check your tire tread depth
Selecting appropriate tires for your vehicle and driving conditions is essential for optimal safety and performance. In Alberta, where temperature fluctuations can be extreme, having the right tires for each season is particularly important.
While all-season tires offer year-round convenience, they’re not always the best choice for Alberta’s harsh winters. Winter tires, mandatory in some Canadian provinces and recommended in Alberta, provide superior traction in temperatures below 7°C. The rubber compounds in winter tires remain flexible in cold conditions, while the specialized tread patterns help evacuate snow and slush.
AMA has a helpful guide on tire types HERE.

Always replace tires with the same size and load rating as specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual or tire placard. Using incorrect tire sizes can affect your vehicle’s handling, fuel economy, and speedometer accuracy.
Browse tire types and sizes at our WEM Toyota Tire Centre. You can use this helpful tool to help you find the perfect tire for your vehicle.
Investing in quality tires from reputable manufacturers ensures better performance, longevity, and safety. While premium tires may cost more initially, they often provide better value through improved fuel efficiency, longer tread life, and enhanced safety features.
Want to know more about how to choose the right tires for your car? Learn about different tire types, sizes, load ratings, and brands HERE.
Regular tire maintenance extends tire life and improves safety. Check tire pressure monthly using a quality gauge, as properly inflated tires improve fuel economy and prevent premature wear. Rotate your tires according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, typically every 8,000 to 12,000 kilometres.
Keep an eye on your vehicle’s alignment and suspension components, as problems in these areas can cause irregular tire wear. Address any vibrations, pulling, or unusual wear patterns promptly to prevent more extensive damage.
While changing a tire is a valuable skill, some situations require professional assistance. If you’re uncomfortable performing the change, lack the proper tools, or encounter complications, don’t hesitate to call for help. Additionally, if your spare tire is a temporary “donut” tire, remember it’s designed for limited use – typically no more than 80 kilometres per hour and 100 kilometres distance.

The extreme weather swings of Northern Alberta can damage your vehicle if you don’t take care of it. That’s why this list of essential car features is a must-have for Edmontonians, whether you’re a long-time resident or just arrived.
Icy roads, snowbanks, freezing temperatures, and cold starts on your way to work… need we say more? Like a scarf and gloves keep you safe from frostbite, your car also needs protection.
Whether you already have a Toyota or are looking for cars in Edmonton, here are our top five essential car features for an Albertan winter.

While handy accessories make your drive more enjoyable, these car features can make a BIG difference when the temperatures plummet.
All-wheel drive (AWD) can save the day when the roads are slick and the snow is thick! It offers additional traction and makes winter drives safer than other drive systems like rear-wheel drive.
AWD systems are used in cars and SUVs to deliver power to all four wheels simultaneously and provide traction to get the vehicle going. They operate continuously and vary power delivery to the front or rear wheels when needed. Brilliantly, this makes for seamless, smooth acceleration in icy conditions. This is especially helpful when stuck on an icy patch of the road or in a snowed-in back alley!

Highlander Hybrid Platinum AWD in Celestial Silver
All-wheel drive is better than two-wheel drive when going on slick surfaces; however, it isn’t enough on its own when driving on snowy roads. Our Toyota experts recommend using winter tires in partnership with AWD to improve braking and cornering in winter.
Learn the difference between AWD, FWD, 4WD and 2WD (rear-drive) vehicles here.
Winter tires are the best choice for Edmontonians as the engineered rubber is designed to perform optimally in cold, snowy conditions. We recommend changing to winter tires when daily temperatures drop below 7°C.
In addition to superior cold-weather performance, winter tires improve grip and traction, remain flexible in freezing temperatures, and have better braking performance.

Winter tires are created to perform best in cold and icy conditions, but all-season tires are intended for year-round use in mild to moderate climates. While all-season tires are perfect for summer weather, we don’t recommend using them in Canada’s severe winter season.
The benefits of winter tires include helping ensure your vehicle runs smoothly, your tires last longer, avoiding unnecessary tire wear and replacements, and you and your passengers stay safe this season.

The cold months are long, and being comfortable (and warm) in your vehicle is a priority. So we recommend investing in car-warming accessories and features like heated seats and steering wheels!
Toyota knows how cold Canada can get and has included heated and ventilated seat add-ons to its lineup of vehicles. While ventilated seats can cool you off in the summer, our heated seats are designed to provide warmth and comfort in cold temperatures!
Say goodbye to cold and exposed hands while driving in -30°C temperatures! To use the heated steering wheel feature, simply press the button with the steering wheel icon on the instrument panel. To turn off the heating function, press the button again.
Edmonton’s Police Chief, Dale McFee, recently stated that he was concerned about the increase in car crashes involving pedestrian fatalities in 2024. And he’s not alone – CityNews Calgary also reported Alberta’s rising driving injuries.

A remote start feature is an Edmontonian’s best friend. Two great remote start options for Toyota owners are the Toyota App Remote Connect or Toyota START+.
The Toyota App lets you stay connected with your vehicle with a host of features, including locking your doors, checking your fuel level, and starting the engine.
Unfortunately, this convenient Remote Connect option isn’t available for some older Toyota vehicle models. That’s where we meet the Toyota START+!
Did you know? West Edmonton Mall Toyota has its own app that allows you to schedule service appointments, earn cash back, and access exclusive deals with West Edmonton Mall businesses.
START+ is a long-range remote starter that lets you start your vehicle from 800m away and activate the heating system for cold winter mornings. It not only helps clear condensation, but it’s super easy to operate!

If you find yourself searching “common car service questions” on Google or trying to figure out your car service invoice, you’re in the right place. We understand that car maintenance can be confusing and stressful, and often the last thing our customers want to do with their busy schedules. But it’s essential to keep your car running smoothly!
Preventative maintenance can reduce vehicle breakdowns and pricey repairs in the future.
This blog will answer questions like:

Our Toyota Maintenance Guide recommends regular oil changes every 5,000 to 10,000 KM, depending on oil type and driving conditions. But just what does oil in your vehicle do?
Engine oil is responsible for lubricating moving parts in your vehicle’s engine, reducing damaging friction and preventing the buildup of dirt and sludge. When your oil levels are low or your oil is dirty, you run the risk of damaging your engine. The oil degrades from heat and collects harmful particles that need to be removed! Regular oil changes to remove oil that has broken down will keep your vehicle running smoothly.

Moreover, if you have a newer vehicle, it may run better on synthetic engine oils! Learn more about conventional vs synthetic oils here. We recommend checking your owner’s manual for more information on oil types and change schedules for your specific Toyota model.

Cabin air filters are designed to clean the air entering your car’s cabin and protect you from exhaust, dust particles, allergens, and other particles in the air. These air filters are typically flat and pleated.
If this filter is dirty, it can no longer effectively clean the air from dust, exhaust or pollen. Luckily, these filters are typically cost-effective and easy to replace.
You should check your owner’s manual to see how often these should be changed, but in general, your filter should be changed at your next service appointment. (We recommend getting a service check-up every six months or 8,000 KM) Get your air filter inspected during your next oil change to see how dirty it is.

While winter tires are not mandatory by law in Alberta, Alberta Transportation recommends winter tires when driving in severe winter conditions. So what makes winter tires helpful for Albertans?
When tires experience cold weather conditions, the rubber stiffens. Winter tires are designed to withstand temperatures of -30°C and to maintain their elasticity. This means that winter tires provide more traction and grip than other tires at that temperature range!
Your safety is our priority! The majority of car collisions resulting in injury in Alberta occur in December, making cold weather conditions a factor in your safety on the road.

Tires play a part in your safety on the road, and so do your windshield wipers. Have you ever had streaked windows while driving down a busy highway? Or encountered a problem with your wipers not working and struggled to see the road? It can be a scary experience.
It’s recommended to replace your windshield wipers with the change of the seasons or every 6 months. Damaged windshield wipers can reduce visibility on the road, and increase glare and risk in Alberta’s unpredictable summer thunderstorms and winter blizzards.

If you need new windshield wipers, look no further! West Edmonton Mall Toyota has an extensive parts inventory with competitive pricing and a full line of accessories. Visit our Parts Centre here.
Your vehicle has many fluids that help keep it running smoothly and safely, and much like an oil change, your fluids need regular refills and maintenance.
Proper fluid levels and quality are crucial for various systems to work correctly and prevent overheating or malfunction. We recommend having your vehicle’s fluids checked at your next service appointment. This includes checking and potentially replacing coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.

If you need some fluid refills, then we’ve got you covered. Our Parts Centre sells a wide range of Toyota Genuine Parts, including conventional and synthetic motor oils, washer fluid, transmission fluid, complete fuel system cleaners, coolant, and more. Visit our Parts Centre on Mondays to Saturdays from 9 am – 9 pm or Sundays from 10 am – 6 pm.
