5 Things To Do in West Edmonton Mall While We Service Your Car 3 800x533 1

Taking your vehicle in for a service appointment (tire swap, oil change, regular maintenance, etc.) usually means sitting around in a stuffy and outdated waiting room flipping through an ancient magazine.

Not when you service your vehicle with us. Instead of sitting around wasting precious time, our customers can head into the largest mall in North America and go shopping, eat dinner, watch a movie, or so much else.

We put together a list of five things to do in West Edmonton Mall while you wait for your car to be serviced. For more creative ideas, be sure to follow us on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook

Grab a Bite

BRBN Street inside West Edmonton Mall has some of the best restaurants in Edmonton. There are so many options to choose from including one of our favourite places to grab a bite Hudsons Canadian Pub.

When you finish shopping, just head to our service department, grab your keys and hit the road.

It’s only the first week of April, and the high has already been 16°C in Edmonton. That means spring has sprung and now is the time to take your Toyota in for a service. Toyota recommends taking your vehicle in for servicing every 8,000 km or 6 months, depending on what comes first. Because winter is so hard on your vehicle, spring is the perfect time to bring it in and minimize the damage the cold months caused.

Why Do You Need To Bring Your Toyota in For a Spring Service?

Alberta winters are incredibly hard on your Toyota. Whether you drive a Tacoma or a Corolla, the extreme temperature changes can play havoc on their rubber parts affecting everything from your wiper blades and door seals to washers and hoses.

Part of a Toyota spring service is examining each of these parts and replacing any that have become too damaged. We also check and top up all your fluids as well as rotate your tires. We even inspect all the hoses related to your brakes.

81df6c0ba22db8b33f50aeb5685ca464x

The extreme cold weather can also cause the electronics in your vehicle to suffer. Even your lights can become affected by the road salt. When our technicians check your vehicle during an annual spring service, they make sure every electrical component within your Toyota is still running as it should.

Reverse The Damage of Road Salt

If you live in Edmonton, chances are you have been on the Henday after a fresh salt mixture has been poured. While it does help keep the roads less icy, it can cause serious damage to the metal components of your vehicle – everything from your connectors to brake pads, rotors, brake lines, hoses, and linkages can suffer. We take the time to visually inspect each of these components and let you know what needs to be changed so you can avoid any breakdowns in the warmer months.

Check Your Air Conditions and Filters

Because you probably had your head cranked all winter long, it’s a good idea to check your air filters and make sure they are debris-free. Even more important is making sure your air conditioning is working so when the sun does come out, you can drive to your destination comfortably.

Top Up Your Fluids

After several months of cold weather, driving to and from work, your vehicle fluids eventually start to get low. While some things are easy to top up on your own, like your washer fluid, there are other important fluids to keep in mind including your brakes and inverter coolant.

One of the most important fluids in your vehicle is your engine oil. If left unchecked for too long, it can start to break down and eventually damage your engine. Making sure to check your engine oil every 8,000 km or 6 months is one of the best things you can do for your Toyota. Thankfully, on your spring service – we do that for you!

Switch Your Winter Tires out

By now, you probably know you need to take your winter tires off when the snow melts. It keeps the tread on your winter tires strong for the next cold season and your all-season tires are far more effective on the dry pavement.

Part of your spring service includes swapping over your tires, but we also go one step further. We thoroughly inspect your all-season tires before we install them. We double-check tread depth, their sidewalls, etc. to make sure they are safe.

Let the Experts Handle The Tough Stuff

There are a million and one things to remember when you own a vehicle. Changing your tires, getting regular oil changes, keeping up with recommended maintenance. How does someone stay on top of it all? That’s what we’re for!

Your Toyota vehicle comes with a Recommended Maintenance Schedule so you can check when the appropriate time is to make the right appointments – whether you drive a Corolla, RAV4, Tundra, Avalon, or C-HR.

Winter is tough on your vehicle and can cause damage you might not even see. From starting it up in cold temperatures to driving on salt-covered roadways to winter storms and more, fluids get low and parts get worn down.

The Mayfield Toyota team is here to make sure your vehicle has everything it needs to transition from winter to summer safely. So your Toyota can stand the test of time – and you can have peace of mind knowing you won’t break down.

When Should I Service My Toyota?

Most of us know when we see an engine light, it’s time to book an appointment for service. However, irregularities or problems shouldn’t be the first time we take our Toyota in. Regular Toyota Maintenance should be scheduled every 6 months or 8,000 kilometers, or whichever comes first. Sometimes Toyota mandates specific guidelines for certain models so we always recommend checking your Toyota Maintenance Schedule online.

What Happens During A Regular Toyota Service?

Properly maintaining your Toyota will ensure it works for years to come. It also means you maintain a high resale value if you decide to sell it down the road. That’s why Toyota recommends booking a service appointment every 6 months or 8,000 kms. So, what happens during one of these regular Toyota service appointments?

By your fourth appointment, we repeat the usual checklist, however we broaden our search throughout the vehicle. This includes

Save Money on Costly Repairs With Regular Maintenance

At some point along your time owning a Toyota, general repairs and updates will need to be scheduled. Major components like your brakes and wheels need regular attention to run optimally and keep you and your passengers safe. But the cost of those repairs skyrockets when they are discovered too late or system damage causes more problems increasing the amount of work needed to your Toyota.

The morale of the story? Regular maintenance on your vehicle will save you money down the road on costly repairs. It also gives you peace of mind. Regular service work helps you avoid roadside breakdowns and keeps your Toyota running longer. Finally, it helps you make more money if you need to resell it privately.

Thank You to Healthcare Workers and First Responders

Life has changed in Alberta in the wake of the Coronavirus and while many of us practice social distancing at home, our heroic healthcare workers continue to show up each day. These hardworking individuals are the first line of defense, sacrificing their own safety to keep all Albertans healthy.

We want to acknowledge the hardworking doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, and EMTs who are battling on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank you and appreciate all that you are doing.

You are true heroes.

As precautions to protect Albertans from the spread of COVID-19 are implemented, we wanted to provide a list of essential car services you should have done. Having a sound vehicle can be critical in an emergency situation.

While some automotive services you can go a while without receiving, others are absolutely essential. If you live in Edmonton or surrounding areas and need one of these services, our team is here to help.

#1 Replace Your Air Filter

Your cabin air filter is the first defense between debris and the interior of your vehicle. It keeps pollen and unwanted particles out of your air conditioning and heating system.

People with breathing issues, severe allergies or asthma find they are often worse when their cabin air filter needs to be replaced. Ensure you and your passengers are breathing clean air

#2 Change Your Oil

In order for your engine to keep running, it needs regular oil changes. Oil is one of the most important things in your engine. It keeps all the parts moving cohesively with minimal friction.

When the oil becomes old or needs changing, your engine begins to overheat. If left without an oil change for too long, your entire engine may wear down and need to be replaced. If there was ever a vital service for your vehicle, regular oil changes are that service.

#3 Rotate Tires and Check Air Pressure

Next to oil, your tires are the most important determinator on how your car drives down a road. They are the first point of connection between you and the pavement. Worn-out tires, a flat tire, or low tire pressure can all be extremely dangerous, and could leave you stranded.

We recommend rotating your tires every time you get an oil change. You should also have your alignment checked yearly to ensure your steering is straight. Good alignment is there to make sure you have maximum traction, and that can mean the world in a risky driving situation.

Our Express Pickup and Drop Off allows customers to drop off, pay and pick-up their vehicle without ever being in contact with another person. These stations are cleaned constantly for your protection. We also have online booking so you can make an appointment from the comfort of your home.

Summer in Alberta can feel short, and most of us want to spend it outdoors. The last thing you want is a vehicle that lets you down when the sun finally shows up.

The good news is that a little seasonal maintenance goes a long way! Here are our top summer car maintenance tips to keep your vehicle running all season long.

Summer Car Maintenance Tips

1. Check Your Oil

Oil is your engine’s first line of defence, and the summer heat puts extra stress on it.

High temperatures cause oil to thin out faster and lose the ability to protect engine components effectively. We recommend an oil change every 8,000 km or six months, whichever comes first.

A Toyota Canada graphic that says "6 months or 8,000km" for the Toyota Canada oil change maintenance schedule reminder.

Read: How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

2. Check Your Coolant

Overheating is one of the most common summer breakdowns, and it’s also one of the most preventable. Your coolant system keeps engine temperature in check, but only if fluid levels are adequate. Check the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold and top it up if needed.

On the road, keep an eye on your dashboard. Pull over if you see:

If the temperature doesn’t come down quickly after pulling over and turning off the AC, switch off the engine and call roadside assistance.

3. Inspect Your Tires

Tires are your vehicle’s only contact with the road, and hot pavement accelerates wear faster than most drivers expect. A 5°C to 6°C increase in temperature boosts tire pressure by about one PSI, and over-inflated tires on hot asphalt increase the risk of blowouts.

Before any summer road trip, check:

Running winter tires through Alberta’s summer degrades the rubber quickly, so we recommend switching to all-season, all-weather or summer tires.

A white man uses a tire pressure gauge to check his tire pressure on his driveway as part of his summer car maintenance routine.

4. Have Your Battery Tested

Most people associate dead batteries with winter, but summer heat is equally damaging. High temperatures accelerate battery fluid evaporation and speed up corrosion on terminals.

If your battery is three years old or older, we recommend getting it tested. You can check the terminals for white or blue-green powder, which signals corrosion, and make sure connections are tight.

5. Test Your Air Conditioning

If the airflow from your AC feels weak or the cabin takes longer to cool down, it’s worth having the system checked. Common causes include low refrigerant, a clogged cabin air filter, or a worn compressor.

Worth knowing: running your AC increases fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. On mild days, cracking windows and letting the vehicle air out before getting in can give the AC a head start and reduce the load on your engine.

A Caucasian woman drives a Toyota bZ on a sunny afternoon. Her hands hold the steering wheel.

6. Check Your Brakes

If you notice squealing, grinding, vibration through the brake pedal, or a longer stopping distance than usual, have your brakes inspected before heading out on your next summer road trip.

Also, if you plan to tow a boat or RV, make sure your brakes are in good shape before adding extra weight.

7. Replace Wiper Blades

Alberta summer storms can arrive without much warning, and having effective wiper blades makes a big difference. Sun exposure hardens and cracks wiper blade rubber over time, and worn blades smear more than they clear.

Also swap your winter washer fluid for a summer formula, if you can. Winter fluid is designed for freeze resistance, not for clearing bugs and road grime at highway speed.

8. Replace Your Cabin Air Filter

A clogged cabin air filter reduces the effectiveness of your air conditioning and can fill the interior with dust, pollen, and other allergens. If you can’t remember the last time yours was replaced, take this as your reminder to get it replaced at your next service appointment.

A side-by-side comparison of a dirty and clean cabin air filter from Toyota.

9. Protect Your Interior

Direct summer sun fades upholstery and can overheat touchscreens and navigation displays. A reflective windshield sunshade is one of the easiest and most effective ways to manage cabin temperature when parked.

Applying a UV protectant to leather and vinyl surfaces also helps prevent cracking over time.

10. Pack an Emergency Kit

Even a well-maintained vehicle can run into trouble. Before any long drive, make sure you’re carrying:
