Tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle. In addition to supporting your vehicle on the road, tires provide traction, absorb road shock, and help direct your vehicle where you want to go. Without tires, your vehicle is essentially useless.
Why is the tread, balance, and placement of your tires so important? It all comes down to saving money, keeping you safe, and lengthening the life of your vehicle.
This post will explain:
Why regular rotations extend the life of your tires
Maintaining optimum tire pressure keeps your vehicle running
Why good tire tread is important
How to check your tire tread
Why wheel alignments save you money
Why choosing the proper tire brand is important

With customers across Edmonton, St. Albert, Stony Plain, and Spruce Grove we feel confident we can help you achieve optimal tire health all-year-round.
Regular Tire Rotations
Front tires typically wear down faster than rear tires, which makes tire rotation an important part of your regular tire care.
You want all four tires to wear out together. That way, you can buy four tires at the same time without having to buy them in pairs, a more cost-effective option.
Wear and tear of your vehicle’s tires is normal. However, sometimes tires wear unevenly. This can be caused by overinflated tires, wheel alignment issues, and more.
Regular tire rotations help you catch these issues early, extending the life of your tires and vehicle! Always check your Toyota vehicle maintenance schedule for your recommended tire rotation schedule.
Maintaining Optimum Tire Pressure
Maintaining optimum tire pressure helps to keep your vehicle running smoothly and safely. Your tires have a specific tire pressure they should always be at. If they are over or under this pressure, your tires will suffer, as will your fuel economy and driving abilities.
Properly inflated tires can:
Stop excessive tread wear
Lengthen the life of your tires
Increase handling, traction, and stopping ability
Improve fuel economy and save you money at the pumps
Pro Tip: Weather temperatures affect your tire pressure. Cold weather can cause your tire air pressure to drop, while warm weather can actually increase tire pressure.
Some Toyota models are equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System that will alert you if you need to stop and check your tires. It’s always a good idea to regularly check your tire pressure, just to be safe.
Why Good Tire Tread Matters
The tread on your tire gradually wears down over time. While this is totally normal, tire tread that has degraded too far can be very dangerous depending on the situation.
For example, a rainy day will often create a build-up of water on the roadways. The grooves (or tread) in your tires push that water away from the surface of your tires.
If your tread is worn down and the grooves aren’t deep enough, water can get trapped underneath your tires and reduce traction on the road altogether.
If you’re traveling at fast speeds and the tires are unable to push the water from beneath the tire, hydroplaning occurs. This means your vehicle loses contact with the road and instead slides on the water, causing total loss of control.
How To Check Tire Tread
A simple way to check your tire tread is to insert a toonie into one of the grooves. If you’re unsure, our Tire Experts can check and record tire tread depth for you! Or, watch this helpful video!
Regular Wheel Alignments Save You Money
A wheel alignment refers to an adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension – the system that actually connects your vehicle to its tires.
Important: It’s not an adjustment of the tires!
A proper alignment adjusts the angles of the tires which allows your vehicle to hit the road properly.
Not only does give you a smoother ride and improve overall handling, but it also lengthens the lifespan of your tires.
Misaligned wheels left for too long can create serious suspension issues resulting in hefty repair fees down the road. Plus, it leads to an increase in gas consumption.
Routine wheel alignments save you money by keeping your tires on the road longer, fueling up less and avoiding costly repairs.
Ever felt your car pulling to one direction? That usually means your wheel alignment is off and needs to be adjusted.
We recommend having your wheel alignment checked once a year. However, if you notice uneven wear on the inside of your tires, make an appointment as soon as possible.
There are dozens of tire brands on the market, each offering differing quality levels and capabilities.
Beyond the tire brand, there are other things to consider:
Where do you live?
What is the weather like in your area?
What do you use your vehicle for?
What’s your budget?
Our Tire Experts are trained to ask the right questions to ensure you get the perfect tire for your vehicle. Living in Alberta means you need a tire that works in almost every condition: hot summer days and icy winter nights.
Our Tire Centre carries all the top brands including BFGoodrich, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Yokohama, Firestone, and many more. If you’ve done the research yourself and know what tires your vehicle needs, order them online today!

Toyota Canada and Canadian Blood Services have been long-standing partners in the fight to build a better tomorrow. With COVID-19 spreading at an alarming rate across Canada, there has never been a more urgent need for blood.
Together both parties are working hard to turn donated blood into usable blood products at an even quicker rate. Because these days, every second counts. We understand these are scary times and social distancing is important if we are to stop the spread of Coronavirus and flatten the curve.
Canadian Blood Services is taking every precaution to keep you safe when you donate blood. We thank the generous Canadians who have selflessly donated blood or donated money during this time. If you’re interested in donating, book an appointment online today!
Thank You to Healthcare Workers and First Responders
Life has changed in Alberta in the wake of the Coronavirus and while many of us practice social distancing at home, our heroic healthcare workers continue to show up each day. These hardworking individuals are the first line of defense, sacrificing their own safety to keep all Albertans healthy.
We want to acknowledge the hardworking doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, and EMTs who are battling on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank you and appreciate all that you are doing.
You are true heroes.
COVID-19 has changed Canadians day-to-day lives. Many non-essential businesses have closed and many are practicing social distancing to help flatten the curve and stop the spread of Corona virus.
With a global pandemic surging, there has never been a better time to prepare your vehicle for an emergency situation. Ensuring its properly serviced and loaded with essential gear is the first step.
If a health emergency strikes, you want to be prepared. That’s why we put together a list of essential things you can do to make sure your car is ready in case you need to leave at a moment’s notice.
Test Your Lights
Walk around the exterior of your vehicle and check your lights for any cracks. Then flip your hazards, brake and reverse lights to ensure all bulbs are in working order.
Check Your Tires
Check each of your tires for tread level. Watch for any bulges or tears. Finally, check your tire pressure and make sure it is aligned with your owners’ manual.
Test Your Brakes
Take your vehicle out for a quick rip around the block. Listen intently for any odd sounds. How quick are your brakes to respond? Is there any lagging? If there is a noise, is it squeaky or does it sound like scraping? If you detect any noise at all, we recommend bringing your vehicle in immediately.
Pack the Essentials
This is very important in times like these. Most people assume an emergency roadside kit is just for winter scenarios. But during a global health crisis, having a kit of essential items in your vehicle at all times is a great idea, and could end up saving a life.
While we do recommend keeping the basic emergency kit items in your trunk — flashlight, first aid supplies, antifreeze, etc. — there are some new things you can add just in case.
A few examples include a sweater and basic toiletry kit with things like toothpaste, contact lenses, toothbrush, medications, etc. Pack a water bottle and some snacks. It’s also a good idea to have all your medical information, Alberta health card and license together.
Get a Routine Service
If you’ve been avoiding an essential service or haven’t taken your car in for regular maintenance for a while, now is the time. Should an emergency strike, you want to know with confidence your vehicle is safe and ready to-go in a moment’s notice.
The three most essential services we recommend having done are oil changes, tire rotations and replacing your air filter. However, it’s also a good idea to have all your major fluids checked as well:
Antifreeze coolant,
Radiator coolant,
Brake fluid
Windshield washer fluid
Power steering fluid
We’re Here To Help
Does your Toyota need a service? Make an appointment online today! Take advantage of our Express Pickup and Drop Off. We sanitize and clean all our stations every 30 minutes to ensure our guests safety.
We care about you and your vehicle! Our service team is here to help ensure your Toyota is running at its most optimal. We are proud to serve customers across Alberta including Edmonton, Spruce Grove, St. Albert and beyond.
Albertans are being increasingly diligent about hygiene in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. That goes beyond personal cleanliness and also extends to their vehicles. Edmontonians want to know their vehicle is being handled with the utmost care when they drop it off for service.
At Mayfield Toyota, we take every precaution to ensure your vehicle is clean and germ-free while being serviced. When you wash your vehicle with us, your keys are handled with gloves, and we use a high-grade disinfectant called Toyota Touch, not just soap and water.
Toyota Touch Cleaner
Our Toyota Touch cleaner contains a fast-acting biocidal agent (the same stuff used in products like Lysol and hand sanitizer!) The active ingredient is an organic salt classified as a quaternary ammonium compound which is well known for its antimicrobial activity.
This antibacterial disinfectant is ideal for sanitizing steering wheels and shift knobs. It can also be used as a generic surface disinfectant. It’s a warranty certified by Toyota, so unlike with bleach and other home cleaners, you don’t have to worry it will harm your interior.
We are proud to continue to serve our customers during these unprecedented times. We recognize how important it can be to have a running vehicle during an emergency.
Your health and safety are at the forefront of our decisions and we continue to implement the highest levels of cleanliness while supporting social distancing. Use our Express Service Pick-Up and Book Your Sevice Appointment Online to avoid contact with staff.
As precautions to protect Albertans from the spread of COVID-19 are implemented, we wanted to provide a list of essential car services you should have done. Having a sound vehicle can be critical in an emergency situation.
While some automotive services you can go a while without receiving, others are absolutely essential. If you live in Edmonton or surrounding areas and need one of these services, our team is here to help.
Your cabin air filter is the first defense between debris and the interior of your vehicle. It keeps pollen and unwanted particles out of your air conditioning and heating system.
People with breathing issues, severe allergies or asthma find they are often worse when their cabin air filter needs to be replaced. Ensure you and your passengers are breathing clean air
#2 Change Your Oil
In order for your engine to keep running, it needs regular oil changes. Oil is one of the most important things in your engine. It keeps all the parts moving cohesively with minimal friction.
When the oil becomes old or needs changing, your engine begins to overheat. If left without an oil change for too long, your entire engine may wear down and need to be replaced. If there was ever a vital service for your vehicle, regular oil changes are that service.
#3 Rotate Tires and Check Air Pressure
Next to oil, your tires are the most important determinator on how your car drives down a road. They are the first point of connection between you and the pavement. Worn-out tires, a flat tire, or low tire pressure can all be extremely dangerous, and could leave you stranded.
We recommend rotating your tires every time you get an oil change. You should also have your alignment checked yearly to ensure your steering is straight. Good alignment is there to make sure you have maximum traction, and that can mean the world in a risky driving situation.
Express Self-Serve Station
In the face of COVID19, we have implemented new strategies to help our guests receive the auto services they need while limiting person-to-person contact. That way, customers can continue to practice social distancing while ensuring their vehicle stays running in case of an emergency.
Our Express Pickup and Drop Off allows customers to drop off, pay and pick-up their vehicle without ever being in contact with another person. These stations are cleaned constantly for your protection. We also have online booking so you can make an appointment from the comfort of your home.
We Can Help
Our team is here for you. Our highly skilled technicians work hard to ensure your vehicle is safe. You and your passengers are on our minds. We want to do everything we can to make sure your car is running smoothly and gets you where you need to go.
What’s the difference between a V6 engine and a V8 engine?
Good question!
The most basic way to describe the difference is that aV6 engine has six cylinders for fuel intake, where a V8 engine has eight cylinders.
Essentially, both engines work the same way. The cylinders create a space where the fuel can be ignited. Once ignited, a series of small explosions are set off while the engine is running.
These explosions create energy within the cylinders that turns the engine and that force is what is used to drive your vehicle down the street!
Horsepower, Torque, and Mileage
When a person is shopping for a new vehicle, they want to know three things about their new engine: horsepower, torque, and mileage. Let’s start with horsepower.
Horsepower
Horsepower tells you how much power your vehicle has at peak performance.
Corolla: 139 horsepower
Highlander: 295 horsepower
Supra: 300 horsepower
All these numbers tell us how strong and fast a car can perform at its most optimal. So, a Highlander is faster than a Corolla, and the Supra is even faster than the Highlander.
Torque
Torque is a little different than horsepower. It tells a driver how hard their engine is able to work. Most people shopping for a truck or SUV want to know how much torque the vehicle might have.
The more torque a vehicle has, the harder it can work and quicker it can reach top speeds, particularly when it is hauling or towing something behind it.
Fuel Economy
Fuel economy refers to the amount of fuel an engine uses to create both horsepower and torque. The more cylinders an engine has, the more space it has to create energy, thus the more fuel it needs.
Or in other words, the bigger the engine, the more gas it needs so a V8 engine needs more gas than a V8 engine does.
What Does the V in V6 and V8 Mean?
Think about the engine that’s inside your lawnmower. That engine probably only has 1 cylinder because it needs far less horsepower than a large vehicle does.
The more cylinders a vehicle has, the more space there is to make those small explosions that create energy. And, the more energy there is the more horsepower you have.
Toyota Tacoma Equipped with a 3.5L 6?cylinder engine
Engines with four cylinders are usually found in more compact vehicles like the Toyota RAVR. Vehicles like the Highlander and 4Runner have six cylinders.
Pickup trucks need more power so many of them are fully equipped with a V8 engine, including the Toyota Tundra. Remember, however, the more cylinders there are, the more fuel they burn.
What Is Engine Displacement?
Engine displacement is the size of all the cylinders in your engine. For instance, the new 2020 Corolla SE has a four-cylinder engine with a combined volume of cylinders that equals two litres
Example: A 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine
A 4-cylinder engine is a great fit for buyers who prioritize fuel economy and performance.
Consider a V6 engine which has six cylinders and a displacement (or combined size of the cylinders) of 3.5 litres. Thanks to those two extra cylinders it has over the V4, this engine has more power and performance.
An eight-cylinder engine is common in pickup trucks, SUVs and performance vehicles. These engines have the most cylinders and are the most powerful. It also means they offer more torque and are better for towing or hauling.
Right now, Toyota offers two eight-cylinder engines: one is a 4.6 litre and the other is a 5.7 litre. The 5.7-litre engine is the most powerful and offers the most towing capacity, however, it might have the lowest fuel-efficient of all the engine options.
How to Decide Which Engine is Right For Me?
Choosing the right vehicle for your needs means knowing what kind of engine you ultimately want.
Think of it this way…
An engine is like a house. The cylinders are the number of rooms it has and the displacement is its square footage. How big of a house you choose depends on what your needs are.
A V4 engine is a great fit if you prioritize fuel efficiency over power. V4 engines in the Toyota lineup includes the Corolla and Yaris.
Meanwhile, most families opt for a V6 engine which gives them a bit more power to spare if they decide to tow something.
A V8 engine inside of the Toyota Tundra is your best bet if what you’re looking for is power!
What Does an Air Filter Do?
Underneath, you’ll find a large, black ductwork that is responsible for directing air from the grille into the engine. From there, the air enters a large cube and inside that cube you will find the air filter.
Once the air is inside, the air filter works to keep dust, pollen, sand, dirt, and debris out of the air that will eventually continue into the engine. Hey, it’s a hard job, but somebody has to do it.
Why is a Good Air Filter Important?
Dust and debris are terrible for your vehicle. When they start to build up in your engine, they can cause it to misfire, breakdown, or lead to potentially expensive repairs. In extreme cases, a build-up of debris can cause your engine to shut down altogether.
How often should I Change My Air Filter?
Toyota recommends that you inspect your air filter every six months or 8,000 kilometres. However, it also depends on the condition of the air filter. It’s always best to check your Vehicle’s Owner’s Manual or you can search your vehicle’s schedule online.
Factors That Speed Up Wear-And-Tear:
Summer Weather
Heavy Pollen
Gravel Roads
Hot Climates
Heavy Pollution
Dusty Worksites
What if I Don’t Replace My Air Filter?
When an air filter becomes clogged with particles and debris, it begins to reduce the amount of air that gets into the engine. This tells your engine to add more fuel; however, this can create a ton of problems.
The extra gasoline can create deposits on your sparkplugs or simply be pushed out into the atmosphere from your exhaust system. If you’ve ever seen someone blow off dark smoke from their exhaust, a dirty air filter may be to blame.
Reduced airflow can also make your car less powerful and sluggish. Eventually, your check engine light will come on, but at that point, your engine might already have become less efficient and your spark plugs may be compromised.
Good News Is…
Changing an air filter is a simple task for our highly-trained technicians, and replacing one is affordable. Even better? Every time you come in for your Toyota mandated service appointment if necessary our technicians will replace it every time. Taking care of your Toyota will ensure it runs properly for years to come.
Planning on taking a road trip this summer? According to a new study conducted by Ipsos, some Canadians are rethinking their travel plans due to rising gas prices. In fact, 47% of Canadians say high fuel costs are making it less likely that they will take a summer road trip this year and 62% say these escalating costs will also affect their general household budgets.
Luckily, Canadians aren’t giving up their vacations altogether. Instead, many are adapting their lifestyles in more long-term ways, like switching to electric vehicles and hybrids. According to the same study, almost 40% of Canadians are considering more fuel-efficient electrified vehicles to avoid spending more money at the pumps.
Vice President of Toyota Canada Stephen Beatty thinks there has never been a better time to try out an electrified option like a plug-in or a fuel cell option.
“Looking ahead, we’re not surprised that 52% of Canadians are likely to purchase an electrified vehicle in the next five years. As a leader in this space, Toyota is thrilled to see their value being recognized – not just for their impact on the environment, but for the potential impact on their wallets too,” says Beatty.
Toyota Offers an Electric Car for Every Alberta Driver
With more Alberta drivers looking for ways to lower their fuel budget, Toyota has seen sales of electric vehicles soar. In fact, 6.7% of their total sales in April were made up of electrified vehicles.
The Toyota RAV4 hybrid is responsible for a large portion of that increase with more than 2,112 units sold, making it the best-ever month for Toyota electrified vehicle sales, ever!

Decrease Your Fuel Consumption & Save Money
While electric vehicles will definitely help lower your bill at the pumps this summer, Natural Resource Canada also recommends following these tips:
Avoid idling
Be consciences of your air conditioning usage
Use the navigation to avoid accidents and construction
Use cruise control when able
Remove roof or bicycle racks and avoid any excess weight
Avoid roads with frequent stops and try to stick to highways
Use a fuel consumption display and learn how to track it
By making a few small changes in your driving habits and planning ahead, you can cut costs this and still head to your favourite vacation spots this year.
Alberta Electric Car Rebates
Thanks to the 2019 federal budget, electrified cars might save you even more money than just at the pumps. Starting May 1, anyone who purchases or leases an eligible zero-emission vehicle will qualify for a new incentive program designed to incentivize drivers to switch to an electric car.
The rebates will take up to $5,000 off the cost of electric vehicles, and $2,500 off plug-in hybrids. To learn more, click here.
