Toyota Electric Vehicles
More than twenty years ago, we introduced the Toyota Prius to the world as the first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle and have been paving the way ever since.
We’ll take a look at four types of electric vehicles below.
Electric Vehicle Types
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV)
This type of hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs) combines the power of a gas engine with electric motors. The hybrid battery recharges as you drive, so there is no need to plug in at a charging station. Toyota HEVs include the RAV4, Corolla, and Grand Highlander.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
BEVs are vehicles that are powered by electricity! These Battery Electric Vehicles produce zero emissions and require plugging in to charge. Toyota BEVs also use regenerative braking to recharge the battery as you drive. Interested in a BEV? Check out the Toyota bZ4X.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)
FCEVs use fuel cells to generate electricity from the oxygen and hydrogen as their power source, and power high-output electric motors to drive. Its only by-product is water emitted from the tailpipe. The Toyota Mirai is an example of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
PHEVs operate very similarly to HEVs, but have the option for electric-only driving range. This requires it to be plugged in and charged from the power grid. You can opt for plug-in hybrid versions of the 2025 Toyota Prius and Toyota RAV4.
Hybrid Synergy Drive
Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system works seamlessly to optimize the gas and electric power of your vehicle as you drive. It operates in three modes: electric, gas, or a combination of the two, which allows your hybrid electric vehicle to manage the power flow.
So, what could this look like?
If you’re driving down the highway and need to accelerate in the passing lane, the gas engine kicks in and works with the electric motor to provide the right amount of power. When you take your foot off the accelerator or hit the brakes, the electric motor will kick in again. Then the engine recycles any excess energy to charge the battery!
Did you know that Toyota’s hybrid powertrain is up to 70% cleaner than most gas and diesel engines? You’re guaranteed to produce fewer emissions and save money on gas at the same time.
