Winter driving in Canada can be unpredictable. Today? It’s sunny and dry. But tomorrow? It’s blizzard time.

That’s why understanding the right time for your winter tire swap is so important. Switching too early can wear out your tires faster, but waiting too long can compromise your safety. So, how do you find the perfect balance? Let’s break it down.

Why a Winter Tire Swap Matters

tire of a car on snow covered and icy road

When temperatures start to drop, your all-season or summer tires begin to lose grip. Winter tires, on the other hand, are designed with softer rubber compounds and deeper treads. These help maintain traction on cold, snowy, and icy roads.

In other words, a winter tire swap isn’t just about following the season; it’s about ensuring your safety, improving control, and extending the life of your tires.

Tip: If you’re unsure about your tire’s performance, visit the West Edmonton Mall Toyota Service Centre for a quick tire inspection.

When Should I Switch to Winter Tires?

There’s a common rule in Canada known as the “7°C rule.” Once daily temperatures consistently drop below 7°C, it’s time for your winter tire swap. That’s when regular tires start to harden, losing the flexibility needed for proper grip.

However, it’s not just about the calendar; it’s about the weather pattern. In Edmonton, cold snaps can happen as early as October, so planning is key.

In addition, waiting too long can mean longer service wait times. Many drivers rush in at the first snowfall, which leads to fully booked appointments.

Pro tip: Beat the rush by scheduling your winter tire swap early at West Edmonton Mall Toyota. Our service team can help you choose the right tires for your Toyota Corolla, RAV4, or Highlander.

How Early Is Too Early?

It can be tempting to install winter tires as soon as fall begins. However, switching too early can wear them out faster.

Generally speaking, late October to early November is the sweet spot for most parts of Alberta. Nevertheless, always check the forecast. If mornings are consistently cold or frost is appearing, that’s your cue to make the swap.

West Edmonton Mall Toyota is proud to announce the successful installation of three Level-2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, reinforcing our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and exceptional customer service.

Here it is in action with the 2026 Toyota bZ.

Our New EV Charging Stations

The new EV chargers have been strategically installed across the dealership, including the delivery area, showroom, and service shop. Designed with exceptional customer experience in mind, the delivery and showroom area features a branded, user-friendly charging experience to help customers learn how to charge their new vehicles.

An Electric Collaboration

This initiative was made possible through a collaborative effort with Modern Niagara, which managed the installation process from planning to execution. The project was further supported by a financial incentive from the Electric Vehicle Charging Program, delivered by Alberta Municipalities with funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. The incentive covered 46% of the total project cost.

Justin Farhat, Operations Manager at West Edmonton Mall Toyota, was pleased with the process: “Modern Niagara was excellent to deal with, helping to get the project planned out, equipment delivered to the site, and installed without impacting our daily operations. Being able to leverage funding from Alberta Municipalities made this initiative a win for both our organization and our customers.”

Justin Sulzle of Modern Niagara said, “Alberta Municipalities has been great to work with and allowed us to offer exceptional value to the customer. We need this program to continue so we can continue to build out charging infrastructure across Alberta.”

Hybrid vehicles have quickly become a favourite among Edmonton drivers, offering a balance of power, efficiency, and innovation that’s hard to beat. At West Edmonton Mall Toyota, three models stand out from the pack, the spirited 2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid, the ever-reliable 2026 Corolla, and the bold, upscale 2026 Toyota Crown. Each offers its own mix of design, performance, and technology, making it easy to find one that fits your lifestyle.

Our Top Toyota Hybrid Vehicles

Plug into the Sporty Prius Plug-In Hybrid

If you’re looking for a hybrid that feels as exciting as it is efficient, the 2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid is ready to impress. Under the hood, a fifth-generation hybrid powertrain pairs with a 2.0-litre engine for an engaging drive, while its lithium-ion battery delivers more than a 50% increase in EV-only range compared to the previous generation, now up to 72 km. That means you can handle most daily commutes on electric power alone, with a gas engine ready to extend your range for longer trips.

Drivers can enjoy flexible charging at home, work, or at public stations, plus regenerative braking to help top up the battery as you drive. Inside, the Prius Plug-In offers the Toyota Multimedia System, cloud navigation, voice-activated Intelligent Assistant, and Remote Connect through the Toyota App. And with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard, advanced safety features come included. Design-wise, its low stance, bold LED lighting, and colour options like Wind Chill Pearl and Supersonic Red make it a head-turner on Edmonton streets.

A Corolla for Everyone

The 2026 Corolla continues to prove why it’s one of Toyota’s most beloved models. Whether you choose the dependable Corolla LE, the stylish Corolla XSE, or the Corolla Hybrid with eAWD, you’re getting a sedan that balances performance, fuel efficiency, and comfort. Gas models feature a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, while Corolla Hybrid grades pair a 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with electric motor-generators for outstanding efficiency.

On SE and XSE models, the sport-tuned suspension brings a more connected road feel without sacrificing comfort. The Corolla’s tech is equally appealing, with available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Connected Services like Service Connect and Destination Assist. As with the Prius, every model comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 for peace of mind on every trip.

The Daring Toyota Crown

For drivers who want hybrid power with a more premium touch, the 2026 Toyota Crown delivers. Its elevated ride height and sleek, coupe-inspired profile give it a presence that stands out in Edmonton traffic. The Crown offers two hybrid powertrain options: the Toyota Hybrid System for efficiency and the HYBRID MAX system for extra performance.

Available in Limited and Platinum grades, the Crown features an electronic on-demand all-wheel drive system for confident handling year-round. Inside, a 12.3-inch Toyota Multimedia display with wireless smartphone compatibility comes standard, along with a Digital Key system so you can unlock and start the car with your phone. Large 19-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels complete the look, reinforcing its sophisticated, confident design.

Which Hybrid is Right for You?

Choosing between these three hybrids comes down to your driving style and needs. If you want an electrified ride with sporty flair and generous EV range, the Prius Plug-In is a top pick. For a practical, efficient daily driver with multiple trim options, the Corolla remains a go-to choice. And if you’re seeking a stylish hybrid sedan with premium features and power, the Toyota Crown is in a class of its own.

    What is Toyota’s Pre-Collision System?

Toyota’s Pre-Collision System uses both camera and radar technology. These work together to detect vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists in front of your car.

When the system detects a possible collision, it responds in three stages:

Best of all, Pre-Collision System is standard on all Toyota models from 2017 onward, including the Corolla, RAV4, Camry, Highlander, and Tacoma.

How to Activate the Pre-Collision System

You don’t need to be tech-savvy to use the Pre-Collision System.

To get started, here’s how to turn it on in just a few taps:

Once activated, the system monitors the road ahead. It alerts you only when a real collision risk is detected. From that point, it’s constantly watching for hazards.

At West Edmonton Mall Toyota, we’ve witnessed a lot of stories of Toyota reliability over the years, but few are as amazing as Jason’s with his 2014 Toyota Tundra Platinum Crewmax.

Just a week and a half ago, West Edmonton-local Jason achieved what many consider the ultimate milestone for any vehicle: rolling over 1 million kilometres on his odometer!

This achievement isn’t just a testament to Jason’s responsible vehicle ownership, but an example of why Toyota has earned a global reputation for reliability.

Let’s meet Jason’s 1 million km Toyota Tundra!

    A close-up of Jason's Toyota Tundra odometer, showing 999,999km.

From harsh Alberta winters to long highway stretches across the province, Edmonton drivers need trucks that can handle whatever challenges come their way. Jason’s 1 million km Toyota Tundra speaks volumes about the engineering excellence and build quality that defines the Toyota brand.

The Journey to 1 Million KM Toyota Excellence

Jason’s path to achieving 1 million km didn’t happen overnight.

As he explains, “I used to use it as an oilfield contractor, so there was a lot of off-road, country roads, back roads, highway, up north in BC and Saskatchewan.”

Jason’s driving experience represents some of the most challenging conditions any vehicle can face. From the rugged terrain of Alberta’s oilfields to the long highway miles between provinces, Jason’s Tundra has truly been put through its paces.

Jason's white work truck, outfitted with work gear, is parked on the side of a worksite.

What makes this milestone even more impressive is that this isn’t Jason’s first Toyota success story. Before his current 1 million km Toyota Tundra, he owned a 2007 model that he drove to an impressive 585,000 kilometres.

A close-up of a Toyota Tundra odometer that shows 700,000km.
Jason’s Toyota Tundra odometer reads 700,000km, well on his way to 1 million km.

Now that his truck has been retired and is no longer used for work, perhaps there will be a few summer camping adventures in their future.

    Toyota Reliability & Durability

So, what is the key to long-lasting Toyota ownership? “I think dealing with the professionals and proper maintenance of the vehicle, [it’s] never had any problems; always performed 100%,” Jason notes, highlighting the important relationship between regular maintenance and vehicle longevity.

Jason's 1 million km Toyota Tundra is parked on a residential road with homes in the background.

When asked why he chose the Toyota Tundra, Jason said, “The reliability of the trucks, I haven’t had any major issues with it over the years. [It] still has the original motor, transmission… all the big components are still original.”

If you’re looking for a reliable vehicle that can stand the test of time, like Jason, then the Tundra is a no-brainer.

    Professional Maintenance

One of the most significant factors in Jason’s 1 million km Toyota success involves his commitment to professional maintenance at the dealership level.

“I probably had about 60 or 70 oil changes over the years, but that’s key to maintenance on the truck,” Jason explains, emphasizing how consistent service intervals contributed to his milestone.

Jason states that he’s had 90% of his vehicle maintenance done here at the West Edmonton Mall Toyota Service Department. And when he was on the road for work? He made a point of getting his vehicle serviced at authorized Toyota service centres.

He also took advantage of our lifetime free oil change program here at West Edmonton Mall Toyota! When you purchase a vehicle from our dealership and follow the recommended maintenance schedule, we cover the cost of all your oil changes.*

“It’s a great dealership, I love coming here. They’ve always treated me good.”

You can shop tires, do repairs, and get an oil change, all while exploring the biggest mall in Canada. (This also includes an express oil change service with no appointment needed!)

For Edmonton drivers considering their next new vehicle, Jason’s story highlights what’s possible with a Toyota.

By taking care of his truck with regular service appointments, he was able to drive the same vehicle for over a decade without any major issues. This meant fewer repairs and replacement costs and a vehicle he could rely on.

Jason’s enthusiasm for Toyota vehicles extends beyond his personal experience: “I’ve convinced a few people over the years to buy Tundras, and they’ve been super happy.”

A white Toyota truck is parked on a road next to a large body of water on a sunny day.

Jason has owned two high-mileage Toyota Tundras so far… but would he do it again?

“I definitely would buy another Tundra. I do like the new style of the one, and I also do like the Tacoma, so it would be a hard choice.”

In fact, Jason is a Toyota guy through and through! Besides his 1 million km Toyota Tundra (and his first impressive Toyota Tundra), he owns a Toyota Scion tC, a Toyota Corolla, and a Lexus NX. “I keep adding to my collection; they’re great vehicles.” Talk about a loyal Toyota fan!

Jason smiles and gives a thumbs up while sitting in the drivers seat of his truck.

It isn’t just another app – it’s a vehicle management system that puts control of your Toyota directly in your hands. Whether you’re warming up your vehicle on a Canadian winter morning or checking your fuel level before a trip, this app was built to make your life easier.

In this guide, we’ll run you through how to use and troubleshoot the Toyota Remote Connect app with easy steps. Let’s get started!

Getting Started with Toyota’s Remote Connect App

Firstly, let’s check your device compatibility.

Most Toyota models from 2018 onwards include the necessary systems, though specific features may vary by model year and trim level. You can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and register for an account.

Once you’ve created your Toyota account, link your vehicle’s identification number (VIN) to establish the connection. You will need to provide basic ownership verification and accept the terms of service specific to Canadian users. The app will automatically detect your location and configure settings appropriate for Alberta’s time zone and regional preferences.

    Essential Features: Climate Control

Alberta’s extreme temperatures make climate control one of the most valuable aspects of Toyota’s Remote Connect app. The remote start feature allows you to pre-condition yourvehicles before entering. During the winter months, this capability can mean the difference between stepping into a warm, comfortable vehicle or enduring several cold minutes while the heating system warms up.

In fact, you can also schedule recurring climate settings for your regular commute.

    Climate Control Capabilities:

    Essential Features: Security and Safety

Not only can the Toyota Remote Connect app help regulate your car’s cabin temperature, but it also has a host of security features. The app sends notifications if doors are left unlocked for extended time periods and has a stolen vehicle locator service.

Are you a parent? The app can also provide insights into vehicle usage patterns and driving behaviour. (Very handy for teenage drivers)

    Security and Safety Tools:

    Essential Features: Maintenance and Service

One of the most practical aspects of Toyota’s Remote Connect app involves its integration with vehicle maintenance and service scheduling.

    Troubleshooting Common App Issues

If you experience connectivity issues, here are some common troubleshooting solutions.

A man in a blue shirt holds his smartphone and explores the Toyota Remote Connect app that's connected to his Toyota Corolla.

Network connectivity is one of the most common challenges, particularly in rural Alberta, where cell coverage may be limited. The app requires consistent data connectivity to communicate with vehicle systems, so temporary service interruptions may happen. However, most connectivity issues will resolve once you’re back in areas with stronger cell coverage.
